Tools for replacing knives in cutting machines. The tools include a clamping body having a base, bracket, clamp, and knife support tab(s). The bracket has a flange portion spaced apart from an upper surface of the base. The clamp is coupled to the base for translating in translation directions transverse to a longitudinal axis of the base. The clamp has a lift tab on the same side of the base as a rear surface thereof, and a handle is secured to the flange portion of the bracket and located on the same side of the base as the lift tab. The support tab projects from the front surface of the base, and the clamp is biased toward the support tab so that the clamp and support tab create a knife gripping mechanism for clamping an edge of a knife against the tab.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A knife replacement tool for installing and removing a knife from a cutting unit of a machine, the knife replacement tool comprising: a clamping body comprising a base, a bracket, a clamp, and at least one knife support tab, the base having a cross-section that defines a lower surface, an oppositely-disposed upper surface, a front surface, and an oppositely-disposed rear surface, the bracket having a flange portion adjacent and spaced apart from the upper surface of the base, the clamp being coupled to the base so as to be able to translate relative to the base in translation directions that are transverse to a longitudinal axis of the base, the clamp comprising a lift tab disposed on the same side of the base as the rear surface, the knife support tab projecting from the front surface of the base in a direction transverse to the translation directions of the clamp; means for biasing the clamp toward the knife support tab; and a handle secured to the flange portion of the bracket, at least a portion of the handle being located on the same side of the base as the lift tab; wherein the clamp and the knife support tab create a knife gripping mechanism by which the clamp clamps an edge of the knife against the tab. 2. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the bracket is secured to the base so as to maintain a fixed position relative to the base. 3. The knife replacement tool according to claim 2 , wherein the bracket is secured to the base with fasteners that pass through the base between the front and rear surfaces thereof. 4. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the bracket comprises a lower flange portion clamped against the rear surface of the base. 5. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the clamp is mounted to the base so that the translation directions are parallel to the front surface of the base and perpendicular to the lower and upper surfaces of the base. 6. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the clamp has a flange portion disposed within a gap defined by and between the flange portion of the bracket and the upper surface of the base. 7. The knife replacement tool according to claim 6 , wherein the biasing means comprises at least one rod that spans the gap between the flange portion of the bracket and the upper surface of the base, and at least one compression spring mounted on the rod and engaging the flange portion of the clamp to bias the flange portion toward the upper surface of the base. 8. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the lift tab and the handle are positioned and oriented relative to each other so that an operator gripping the handle with their hand can simultaneously grasp and draw the tab toward the handle, causing the clamp to translate so that the flange portion thereof translates away from the upper surface of the base and toward the flange portion of the bracket against a biasing effect of the biasing means. 9. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the knife support tab is a portion of the bracket and is adjacent to and abuts the lower surface of the base. 10. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein the biasing means biases the flange portion of the clamp into contact with the knife support tab. 11. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , wherein a lowermost edge of the clamp has projections for engaging valleys of the knife that are defined by corrugations in the knife, and the projections are engageable with the valleys to assist in positioning and securing the knife relative to the longitudinal direction of the base. 12. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , the tool further comprising magnets in the lower surface of the base. 13. The knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , the tool further comprising a slot in the lower surface of the base that is sized to receive a portion of the cutting head. 14. A magnetic tool for use with the knife replacement tool according to claim 1 , the magnetic tool comprising at least one magnet disposed in a valley or concavity defined in a surface of the tool. 15. A magnetic tool of claim 14 , wherein the at least one magnet is a first magnet of a plurality of magnets, the first magnet is centrally located near a midpoint of the valley of the surface of the magnetic tool for attracting a knife clamp of the cutting unit, and second and third magnets are located near outer extents of the surface to magnetically secure the magnetic tool to the cutting unit.
