What is claimed is: 1. A catalyst comprising a porous carbon composite, wherein the carbon composite comprises pores with a BJH pore volume between 0.0100 cm 3 g −1 to less than 0.1000 cm 3 g −1 , the catalyst further comprising ferric sulfate dispersed within the pores of the carbon composite, the ferric sulfate being 5-20 wt. % based on the total weight of the catalyst. 2. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon composite contains a mixed meso-microporosity. 3. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon composite has a specific surface area of between 1-2000 m 2 /g. 4. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon composite has a maximum BJH pore volume of 0.0365 cm 3 g −1 . 5. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon composite is derived from waste tires. 6. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the anion component of the salt is present on the surface of the porous carbon composite. 7. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises 10-20 wt. % ferric sulfate. 8. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises 5-15 wt. % ferric sulfate. 9. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the ferric sulfate is uniformly dispersed within the pores. 10. The catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein sulfur comprises 3.4-4.3 atomic % of the catalyst.
