Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A trans-anal irrigation (TAI) system adapted for self-use includes an irrigation head supplied with water from a reservoir by a pump or by gravity feed. The irrigation head has either internal or external structures for releasably retaining the head in a user's rectum during the water flow portion of a TAI process. A guide member arm may be provided for manipulating the irrigation head for both insertion and removal. The irrigation head is reliably attached to the guide member arm. The guide member arm may include an integral manual pump.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A rectal irrigation device, comprising: a fluid supply including an irrigation liquid reservoir that sits on a base, the reservoir being removably mounted on the base and a bottom of the reservoir includes a shut-off valve which is closed when the reservoir is removed from the base, the base including a projection which fits into the shut-off valve when the reservoir is mounted on the base to open the shut-off valve; an irrigation head for insertion into a user's rectum; a controller; tubing connecting the irrigation head to the reservoir; and a pump for delivering irrigation liquid from the reservoir through the tubing to the irrigation head. 2. The rectal irrigation device of claim 1 wherein the reservoir includes an openable top. 3. The rectal irrigation device of claim 2 wherein the openable top is slidably openable. 4. The rectal irrigation device of claim 1 wherein the pump is in the base. 5. The rectal irrigation device of claim 1 further comprising a guide member engageable with the irrigation head for manipulating the irrigation head. 6. The rectal irrigation device of claim 5 further characterized in that the guide member has a shaft with a front loading section and a rear loading section, the rear loading section being adapted for releasable attachment of the tubing; and the irrigation head is releasably connected to the front loading section of the guide member.
