Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for providing access to media content associated with an artist scheduled for performance. A media application enables display of a playlist personalized for a user, based on a location of the user, a list of artists scheduled for performance, and a media consumption history of the user. An input action causes a media server to populate the playlist with media content. The media server determines the location of the user, retrieves those performance listings within a predetermined distance, retrieves the media consumption history of the user, filters the performance listings based on the media consumption history to obtain a set of artists having performance listings relevant to the user, selects media content items associated with each artist, and organizes the selected media content items within the playlist.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for providing access to media content associated with an artist scheduled for performance, using a digital media content environment, comprising: a media device including a media application that enables display of a playlist personalized for a user based on a list of artists scheduled for performance, and a media consumption history of the user; wherein an input action can be performed by the user to cause a media server to populate the playlist with media content accessible to the user via the playlist; and wherein upon the user performing the input action, the media server: queries a database comprising listening profiles, to determine listening profiles for the user and for a plurality of other users having listening profiles similar to the user, queries a database comprising media content consumption information including media consumption histories of users, to retrieve the media consumption history of the user, and aggregate delivery information indicative of media consumption by the plurality of other users having listening profiles similar to the user, queries a database comprising performance listings to retrieve a plurality of performance listings filtered based on the retrieved media consumption history of the user, and the aggregate delivery information indicative of media consumption by the plurality of other users having listening profiles similar to the user, to obtain a set of artists having performance listings relevant to the user, queries the database comprising media content consumption information to select a media content item associated with each artist from the set of artists, and organizes and populates the playlist with the selected media content items. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein upon populating the playlist the media server provides information regarding the performance listing for each artist from the set of artists accessible to the user via the playlist. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the information regarding the performance listing for each artist from the set of artists includes a link to purchase an admission ticket to the performance. 4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the information regarding the performance listing for each artist from the set of artists is accessible to the user via a hyperlink that launches a browser and loads a website that allows ticket purchase to the performance. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the database comprising performance listings is populated by periodically querying a feed provided by one or more concert organizers via an application programming interface. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media server includes a historical media content determination component that enables the use of user-based, activity-based, period-based, or another grouping with a listening history, to determine the media consumption history of the user. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the selected media content associated with each artist is identified based on one or more of content popularity, content release date, artist preference, and publisher preference. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media server determines the location of the user, and queries the database comprising performance listings to retrieve those performance listings within a predetermined distance of the location of the user. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media server operates to search, within the database comprising performance listings, for concerts matching artists identified in the retrieved media consumption history of the user. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media server operates to search, within the database comprising performance listings, for concerts at venues requested by the user. 11. A method for providing access to media content associated with an artist scheduled for performance, using a digital media content environment, comprising: providing, at a media device, a media application that enables display of a playlist personalized for a user based on a list of artists scheduled for performance, and a media consumption history of the user; receiving indication of an input action performed by the user to cause a media server to populate the playlist with media content accessible to the user via the playlist; and upon the user performing the input action, the media server: queries a database comprising listening profiles, to determine listening profiles for the user and for a plurality of other users having listening profiles similar to the user, queries a database comprising media content consumption information including media consumption histories of users, to retrieve the media consumption history of the user, and aggregate delivery information indicative of media consumption by the plurality of other users having listening profiles similar to the user, queries a database comprising performance listings to retrieve a plurality of performance listings filtered based on the retrieved media consumption history of the user, and the aggregate delivery information indicative of media consumption by the plurality of other users having listening profiles similar to the user, to obtain a set of artists having performance listings relevant to the user, queries the database comprising media content consumption information to select a media content item associated with each artist from the set of artists, and organizes and populates the playlist with the selected media content items. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein upon populating the playlist the media server provides information regarding the performance listing for each artist from the set of artists accessible to the user via the playlist. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the information regarding the performance listing for each artist from the set of artists includes an ability a link to purchase an admission ticket to the performance. 14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the database comprising performance listings is populated by periodically querying a feed provided by one or more concert organizers via an application programming interface. 15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the media server includes a historical media content determination component that enables the use of user-based, activity-based, period-based, or another grouping with a listening history, to determine the media consumption history of the user. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the selected media content associated with each artist is identified based on one or more of content popularity, content release date, artist preference, and publisher preference. 17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising determining the location of the user, and queries the database comprising performance listings to retrieve those performance listings within a predetermined distance of the location of the user. 18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the media server operates to search, within the database comprising performance listings, for concerts matching artists identified in the retrieved media consumption history of the user. 19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the media server operates to search, within the database comprising performance listings, for concerts at venues requested by the user. 20. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium, including instructions stored thereon which when read and executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform the steps comprising: providing, at a media device, a media application that enables display of a playlis
