Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A battery assembly includes a battery that has a top surface surrounded by a circumferential edge; and a removable tab attached to the top surface. The removable tab includes a first tab end and an oppositely disposed second tab end; a gripping region disposed adjacent to the first tab end; and a battery cell attachment region disposed adjacent to the second tab end and attached to the top surface of the battery. The battery cell attachment region has first and second oppositely disposed sidewalls, wherein at least one of the first and second sidewalls is curved inwardly away from the circumferential edge of the battery such that a portion of the top surface of the battery is exposed between the sidewall and the circumferential edge of the battery.

What is claimed: 1. A battery assembly, comprising: a battery comprising a top surface surrounded by a circumferential edge; and a removable tab attached to the battery, the removable tab comprising: a first tab end, an oppositely disposed second tab end, and first and second oppositely disposed sidewalls between the first tab end and the second tab end; a gripping region disposed adjacent to the first tab end, the gripping region being located outside of the circumferential edge of the battery; and a battery cell attachment region disposed adjacent to the second tab end, the battery cell attachment region being directly attached to the top surface of the battery within the circumferential edge of the battery, the battery cell attachment region having the first and second oppositely disposed sidewalls, wherein at least one of the first and second sidewalls of the tab in the battery cell attachment region is curved inwardly away from the circumferential edge of the battery, while attached to the top surface of the battery, such that a portion of the top surface of the battery is exposed between the sidewall and the circumferential edge of the battery. 2. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein about 5% to about 75% of the top surface of the battery is exposed and the remaining portion of the top surface is covered by the removable tab. 3. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the first and second sidewalls has a radius of curvature of about 0.1 m to about 10 mm. 4. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first sidewall and the second sidewall are both curved and have the same radius of curvature. 5. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first sidewall and the second sidewall are both curved and have different radii of curvature. 6. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the battery cell attachment region has a width of about 0.2 mm to about 10 mm, as measured by a straight line extending from a center point of curvature of the first sidewall to a center point of curvature of the second sidewall. 7. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the removable tab comprises a material selected from the group consisting of biaxially-oriented polypropylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate, polyester, polyolefin, polyethylene, and coextrusions, laminates, and other combinations thereof. 8. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the tab has a thickness of about 0.1 mm to about 1 mm. 9. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the battery is a metal/air battery and comprises a plurality of air holes in the top surface, and the battery cell attachment region is disposed over and covers each of the air holes in the plurality of air holes. 10. The battery assembly of claim 9 , wherein the metal/air battery is a zinc/air button cell. 11. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the distance between the first and/or second sidewall to the circumferential edge is about 0.1 mm to about 10 mm, as measured from a straight line extending from the center point of curvature of the sidewall to the circumferential edge. 12. A method of using the battery assembly of claim 1 , comprising: gripping the battery assembly by the gripping region of the removable tab; inserting the battery assembly into a battery compartment; removing the removable tab by applying a peeling force to the battery cell attachment region while applying pressure on the portion of the top surface of the battery exposed between the curved sidewall and the circumferential edge. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein pressure is applied by a user's fingertip. 14. A removable tab, comprising: a first tab end and an oppositely disposed second tab end and first and second oppositely disposed sidewalls between the first tab end and the second tab end; a gripping region disposed adjacent to the first tab end, the gripping region being adapted to be located outside of a circumferential edge of a battery; a battery cell attachment region disposed adjacent to the second tab end, the battery cell attachment region adapted to be directly attached to a top surface of a battery, within the circumferential edge of the battery, wherein the battery cell attachment region has the first sidewall and the oppositely disposed second sidewall, and at least one of the first and second sidewalls of the tab in the battery cell attachment region is curved inwardly, when attached to the top surface of the battery, such that a portion of a top surface of the battery is exposed when the battery cell attachment region is attached to the top surface of the battery. 15. The removable tab of claim 14 , wherein the first sidewall and/or the second sidewall have a radius of curvature of about 0.1 mm to about 10 mm. 16. The removable tab of claim 14 , wherein the first sidewall and the second sidewall are both curved and have the same radius of curvature. 17. The removable tab of claim 14 , wherein the first sidewall and the second sidewall are both curved and have different radii of curvature. 18. The removable tab of claim 14 , wherein the gripping region has a length of about 10 mm to about 35 mm. 19. The removable tab of claim 14 , wherein the battery cell attachment region has a width of about 0.2 mm to about 10 mm, as measured by a straight line extending from a center point of curvature of the first sidewall to a center point of curvature of the second sidewall. 20. The removable tab of claim 14 , wherein the removable tab comprises a material selected from the group consisting of biaxially-oriented polypropylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate, polyester, polyolefin, polyethylene, and coextrusions, laminates, and other combinations thereof. 21. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second sidewalls are concavely curved. 22. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the gripping region has two concavely curved sidewalls. 23. The battery assembly of claim 1 , wherein the top surface of the battery includes a plurality of air holes and each air hole in the plurality of air holes on the top surface of the battery is covered by the battery attachment region.
