Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An accessory for use with an oscillating power tool includes an attachment portion having a first planar member, a second planar member parallel to the first planar member, a central opening defined in one of the first planar member and the second planar member, a keyed sidewall disposed at least partially around the central opening and extending from the first planar member to the second planar member transverse to the first planar member and to the second planar member, and a plurality of equiangularly spaced recesses defined in one of the first planar member and the second planar member, the recesses spaced apart from the keyed sidewall and not in communication with the central opening. A working portion may be couplable to the attachment portion and configured to perform an operation on a workpiece.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An attachment member configured to couple a working portion of an accessory to an oscillating power tool comprising: a planar first top surface and a planar first bottom surface; a planar second top surface parallel to and spaced from the first top surface and a planar second bottom surface parallel to and spaced from the first bottom surface; a central opening defined in at least one of the first top surface and the second top surface; a keyed sidewall disposed at least partially around the central opening and extending from the first top surface to the second top surface transverse to the first top surface and to the second top surface, the keyed sidewall including a plurality of wall portions that together form at least a portion of a twelve point star shape; and a plurality of equiangularly spaced recesses defined in one of the first top surface and the second top surface, the recesses spaced apart from the keyed sidewall and not in communication with the central opening wherein one of the first top surface and the second top surface extends radially inward from the keyed sidewall and the other of the first top surface and the second top surface extends radially outward from the keyed sidewall, wherein the keyed sidewall is configured to be engaged by a first mating geometry of a first oscillating power tool, and wherein the plurality of recesses are configured to be engaged by a different second mating geometry of a second oscillating power tool. 2. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of recesses is radially elongated with curved corners. 3. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein each of the recesses is radially aligned with a point of the at least a portion of a twelve point star shape of the keyed sidewall. 4. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of wall portions together form an entirety of a twelve point star shape. 5. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein the keyed sidewall extends around an entire circumference of the central opening. 6. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein the working portion of the accessory comprises at least one of a cutting blade and an abrasive tool. 7. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein the first top surface has a ring-like shape with a first outer diameter and the second top surface has a ring-like shape with a second outer diameter. 8. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein each of the first top surface, the first bottom surface, the second top surface, and the second bottom surface are free of any protrusions extending from the first top surface, the first bottom surface, the second top surface, and the second bottom surface. 9. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein the attachment member is configured to facilitate tool-free attachment of the working portion of the accessory to at least one of the first oscillating power tool and the second oscillating power tool without use of a secondary tool. 10. The attachment member of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of wall portions comprises a plurality of adjacent V-shaped wall portions, each V-shaped wall portion composed of a pair of wall portions that converge at an outer point as they extend radially outward from the central opening and that are joined at an inner point to an adjacent pair of V-shaped wall portions to form the at least a portion of the twelve-point star shape. 11. An attachment member configured to couple a working portion of an accessory to an oscillating power tool comprising: a planar first bottom surface and a planar first top surface a planar second bottom surface and a planar second top surface parallel to and spaced from the first top surface; a central opening defined in at least one of the first top surface and the second top surface; a keyed sidewall disposed at least partially around the central opening and extending from the first top surface to the second top surface transverse to the first member top surface and to the second member top surface, the keyed sidewall including a plurality of wall portions that together form at least a portion of a twelve point star shape; and a plurality of equiangularly spaced recesses defined in one of the first top surface and the second top surface, the recesses spaced apart from the keyed sidewall and not in communication with the central opening, wherein one of the first top surface and the second top surface extends radially inward from the keyed sidewall and the other of the first top surface and the second top surface extends radially outward from the keyed sidewall, wherein each of the first top surface, the first bottom surface, the second top surface, and the second bottom surface are free of any protrusions extending from the first top surface, the first bottom surface, the second top surface, and the second bottom surface, wherein the keyed sidewall is configured to be engaged by a first mating geometry of a first oscillating power tool, and wherein the plurality of recesses are configured to be engaged by a different second mating geometry of a second oscillating power tool. 12. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of recesses is radially elongated with curved corners. 13. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein each of the recesses is radially aligned with a point of the at least a portion of a twelve point star shape of the keyed sidewall. 14. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of wall portions together form an entirety of a twelve point star shape. 15. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the keyed sidewall extends around an entire circumference of the central opening. 16. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the working portion of the accessory comprises at least one of a cutting blade and an abrasive tool. 17. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the first top surface has a ring-like shape with a first outer diameter and the second top surface has a ring-like shape with a second outer diameter. 18. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the first bottom surface and the second bottom surface are co-planar. 19. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the attachment member is configured to facilitate tool-free attachment of the working portion of the accessory to at least one of the first oscillating power tool and the second oscillating power tool without use of a secondary tool. 20. The attachment member of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of wall portions comprises a plurality of adjacent V-shaped wall portions, each V-shaped wall portion composed of a pair of wall portions that converge at an outer point as they extend radially outward from the central opening and that are joined at an inner point to an adjacent pair of V-shaped wall portions to form the at least a portion of the twelve-point star shape.
