Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A sleep system comprises an air posturizing module having a case, the case comprising a first case section extending medially along a length of the case to define a movable first section, a second case section adjacent to the first case section and extending along a length of the case to define a movable second section, a third case section defining a third posturing section, a fourth case section extending medially along a length of the case to define a movable third section, and a fifth case section extending medially along a length of the case to define a movable fourth section. One or more first air chambers are carried in the first, third and fourth case sections to provide a first sleep area, and one or more second air chambers are carried in the second, third, and fifth module sections to provide a second sleep area.

What is claimed is: 1. A sleep system, comprising: a mattress comprising: a first sleep area for a first occupant, the first sleep area comprising a first movable upper section and a first movable lower section longitudinally aligned with the first movable upper section; a second sleep area for a second occupant, the second sleep area comprising a second movable upper section adjacent to the first movable upper section, and a second movable lower section adjacent to the first movable lower section and longitudinally aligned with the second movable upper section; a first medial split that extends as a straight line between the first movable upper section and the second movable upper section; a second medial split that extends as a straight line between the first movable lower section and the second movable lower section; a common middle section extending between the first sleep area and the second sleep area so as to join the first sleep area to the second sleep area at the common middle section to form a joined substantially unitary middle section, the common middle section being positioned between the first movable upper section and the first movable lower section of the first sleep area and positioned between the second movable upper section and the second movable lower section of the second sleep area; a first air chamber carried by the first movable upper section, the first movable lower section, and a first portion of the common middle section, wherein the first air chamber extends along the first sleep area from a head of the first sleep area to a foot of the first sleep area and is positioned in each of the first movable upper section, the first movable lower section, and the common middle section; a second air chamber carried by the second movable upper section, the second movable lower section and a second portion of the common middle section, wherein the second air chamber extends along the second sleep area from a head of the second sleep area to a foot of the second sleep area and is positioned in each of the second movable upper section, the second movable lower section, and the common middle section such that both of the first and second air chambers are positioned in the common middle section; and wherein the first movable lower section comprises a first portion positioned and configured for supporting a first user's thigh and a second portion positioned and configured for supporting the first user's calf and foot, wherein the second movable lower section comprises a third portion positioned and configured for supporting a second user's thigh and a fourth portion positioned and configured for supporting the second user's calf and foot, wherein the first medial split has a first length from the head to the common middle section, wherein the second medial split has a second length from the foot to the common middle section, wherein the second length is greater than the first length, wherein the first length and the second length are both greater than a distance across the common middle section from the first medial split to the second medial split. 2. The sleep system of claim 1 , further comprising: an articulation system for articulating the first movable upper section, the first movable lower section, the second movable upper section, and the second movable lower section; and an inflation system configured to individually control pressure in the first air chamber to control firmness of the first sleep area in each of the first movable upper section, the first movable lower section, and the common middle section as well as to individually control pressure in the second air chamber in order to control the firmness of the second sleep area in each of the second movable upper section, the second movable lower section, and the common middle section. 3. The sleep system of claim 1 , wherein the first movable upper section comprises a first beveled edge and the second movable upper section comprises a second beveled edge, wherein the first beveled edge is located adjacent to the second beveled edge and the first and second beveled edges together define a channel between the first and second movable upper sections when the first and second movable upper sections are horizontally aligned. 4. The sleep system of claim 1 , wherein the first medial split linearly bisects the mattress between the first sleep area and the second sleep area. 5. The sleep system of claim 4 , further comprising a friction-reducing material disposed along adjacent interior side surfaces of the mattress formed by the split, wherein the friction-reducing material is configured to allow interior side surfaces to slide freely or relatively freely over one another when the first sleep area and the second sleep area are moved relative to each other. 6. The sleep system of claim 4 , wherein the second medial split linearly bisects the mattress between the first sleep area and the second sleep area. 7. The sleep system of claim 6 , further comprising a friction-reducing material disposed along adjacent interior side surfaces of the mattress formed by the second split, wherein the friction-reducing material is configured to allow interior side surfaces to slide freely or relatively freely over one another when the first sleep area and the second sleep area are moved relative to each other. 8. The sleep system of claim 1 , wherein the first sleep area defines a first top surface configured to support a first occupant, a first head surface at the first head, a first foot surface at the first foot, a first outer side surface at the first outer side, a first head-split surface at a longitudinal midline, and a first foot-split surface at the longitudinal midline, wherein the first top surface is substantially perpendicular to each of the first head surface, the first foot surface, the first outer side surface, the first head-split surface, and the first foot split surface; the second sleep area extends from a second head to a second foot and extending from a second outer side to the longitudinal midline, wherein the second sleep area defines a second top surface configured to support a second occupant, a second head surface at the second head, a second foot surface at the second foot, a second outer side surface at the second outer side, a second head-split surface at the longitudinal midline, and a second foot-split surface at the longitudinal midline, wherein the second top surface is substantially perpendicular to each of the second head surface, the second foot surface, the second outer side surface, the second head-split surface, and the second foot split surface; and the common middle section is a connection portion that connects the first sleep area to the second sleep area at a middle portion of the mattress such that the first top surface is connected to the second top surface to form a substantially unitary connected section at the middle portion of the mattress, wherein the first head-split surface extends along a first substantially straight plane from the first head to the connecting portion and the second head-split surface extends along a second substantially straight plane from the second head to the connecting portion such that the first head of the first sleep area can be raised and lowered independently of the second head of the second sleep area, wherein the first foot-split surface extends along the first substantially straight plane from the first foot to the connecting portion and the second foot-split surface extends along the second substantially straight plane from the second foot to the connecting portion such that the first foot of the first sleep area can be raised and lowered independently of the second foot of the second sleep area, wherein the first and second hea
