Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A context-aware healthcare notification system may include a processor and a memory. The memory may include instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to determine when a user device is within a proximity of a healthcare device or a patient, receive information related to the healthcare device or patient from multiple healthcare systems, when the user device is determined to be within the proximity of the healthcare device or the patient, and transmit, to the user device over the communication network, at least a portion of the information. In one or more embodiments, the instructions, when executed by the processor, may further cause the processor to receive information from the healthcare device, when the user device is determined to be within the proximity of the healthcare device or the patient, and transmit, to the user device over the communication network, at least a portion of the information.

What is claimed is: 1. A user device for detecting and correcting an infusion pump experiencing an error, comprising: a wireless interface configured to communicate with the infusion pump when proximate the infusion pump, and to communicate with a patient information device worn externally by the patient when in a proximity of the patient; a transmitter configured to provide an indication to a control system remote from the user device that the user device is within the proximity of the patient and the infusion pump when an exchange of the first and second wireless electrical signals is performed; a processor configured to: determine, responsive to communication between the wireless interface and the infusion pump, that the user device moved within a proximity of the infusion pump; determine, responsive to communication between the wireless interface and the patient information device worn externally by the patient, that the user device moved within a proximity of the patient; provide, to the control system, using the transmitter, and responsive to determining that the user device moved within the proximity of the infusion pump and the patient, an indication that the user device is within the proximity of the patient and the infusion pump; receive, from the control system, based on determining that the user device moved within the proximity of the patient, and moved within the proximity of the infusion pump, and providing the indication to the control system, alert information informing that the user device is located within the proximity of the patient to which a medication is being administered by the infusion pump and that the infusion pump is experiencing an error condition; determine that the alert information indicates that the infusion pump requires a corrective action to change administering the medication to the patient through the infusion pump to prevent an occurrence of an undesirable action; reprogram the infusion pump, based at least in part on the determined alert information, causing an operation of the infusion pump to be changed in response to the reprogramming; and display, responsive to receiving the alert information, at least a portion of the alert information received from the control system, the alert notification indicating a course of action for performing the corrective action by modifying operation of the infusion pump. 2. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless interface comprises an induction coil. 3. The user device of claim 2 , wherein the wireless interface is configured to use the induction coil to determine when the user device is located within the proximity of a radio frequency device associated with the patient information device. 4. The user device of claim 3 , wherein the radio frequency device comprises a wristband. 5. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the receiver is configured to receive the alert information from a control system over a communication network. 6. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the alert information comprises at least one of safety information or drug interaction information and the display is further configured to display the safety information or the drug interaction information. 7. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the alert notification is configured to be a visual display or an audio display based on a distance between the user device and an infusion pump. 8. A method for detecting and correcting an infusion pump experiencing an error, the method comprising: determining that a user device is located within a proximity of an infusion pump located in a patient care area; determining, while the user device is located within the proximity of the infusion pump, that the user device is located within a proximity of a patient identification device affixed to a patient; obtaining, responsive to determining that the user device is located within the proximity of the infusion pump, information pertaining to the infusion pump; determining, responsive to obtaining the information pertaining to the infusion pump, that the infusion pump is currently experiencing an error condition regarding administration of a medication to the patient; determining, responsive to determining the infusion pump is currently experiencing the error condition and responsive to determining that the user device is located within the proximity of the patient identification device and determining that the user device is located within the proximity of the infusion pump, that the user device has moved within a proximity of an infusion device experiencing the error condition while administering a medication to the patient; responsive to determining that the user device has moved within the proximity of the infusion device experiencing the error condition while administering the medication to the patient, by one or more computing devices for display by the user device: determining a corrective action for the determined error condition; providing, to the user device for display by the user device, an alert notification indicating that the user device is located within the proximity of the infusion device and the patient, that the infusion device is experiencing an error condition, and a course of action for performing the corrective action for the error condition; and causing a reprogramming of the infusion device based on the corrective action the corrective action to change an infusion performed by the infusion device. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the detecting comprises detecting a radio frequency signal transmitted to the infusion device. 10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing an additional audible alert when the user device is not within a proximity of the infusion device and wherein displaying the alert notification comprises providing a visual alert when the user device is within the proximity of the infusion device. 11. A system, comprising: an infusion device disposed outside of a patient and configured to (a) provide a medication to the patient and (b) detect an electronic signal from at least one of a plurality of user devices when the at least one of the plurality of user devices enters a proximity of the infusion device; and a control system comprising: one or more processors; and a memory including instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to: receive, from the infusion device, an identification of a patient to which the infusion device is administering a medication; receive a location of a respective user device of the plurality of user devices, the respective user device being remote from the control system; determine a location of the infusion device; determine, responsive to and based on receiving the location of the respective user device, determining the location of the infusion device, and receiving the identification of the patient, that the respective user device is within a proximity of the infusion device while the infusion device is administering the medication to the patient; receive, from a healthcare system, information regarding an error condition experienced by the infusion device; responsive to receiving the information regarding the error condition and determining that the respective user device is within the proximity of the infusion device while the infusion device is administering the medication to the patient; determine that the infusion device is experiencing an error condition while administering the medication to the patient and while the user device is proximate to the infusion device; determine a corrective action for the error condition; and transmit, to the respective user device over a communication netw
