Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A powered catheter and/or powered catheter system is described. The catheter includes a catheter hub with one set of contact components that are configured to connect to a mating cable with a corresponding second set of contact components. The mating cable can be part of another device, such as a controller or power source.

What is claimed is: 1. A catheter system comprising: a catheter hub having a hub body; a hub passage extending longitudinally between a proximal end and a distal end of the hub body; and a catheter connector assembly located on a side adjacent to said hub passage, said catheter connector assembly comprising one or more hub electrical contacts that are in electrical communication with a distal end of said catheter hub; an electrical interface configured to supply power to a catheter via an interface connector assembly that is connectable to said catheter connector assembly; said interface connector assembly comprising one or more interface electrical contacts; and, a magnetic attachment mechanism comprising a first magnet on said catheter connector assembly facing vertically relative to said hub electrical contacts; and, a second magnet on said interface connector assembly facing vertically relative to said interface electrical contacts; wherein said magnetic attachment mechanism further comprises a third magnet facing horizontal relative to said interface electrical contacts and a fourth magnet facing horizontal relative to said interface electrical contacts; and wherein said third magnet is positioned adjacent to said one or more hub electrical contacts and said fourth magnet is positioned adjacent to said one or more interface electrical contacts. 2. The catheter system of claim 1 , further comprising a catheter connected to said distal end of said catheter hub, said catheter further comprising an electrically powered component that is in electrical communication with said catheter connector assembly such that said electrically powered component is selectively operable by said electrical interface. 3. The catheter system of claim 2 , wherein said distal end of said catheter hub includes distal electrical contacts that are connectable to proximal electrical contacts on a proximal end of said catheter. 4. The catheter system of claim 1 , further comprising two vertical ridges positioned on each side of said first magnet. 5. The catheter system of claim 4 , wherein said one or more hub electrical contacts are upwardly pointed or triangular. 6. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein any of said magnets of said magnetic attachment mechanism are flat, elevated, depressed, or rounded relative to surfaces surrounding them. 7. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein said catheter connector assembly further comprises a plurality of raised structures that are shaped to mate with depressions in said interface connector assembly. 8. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein said catheter connector assembly further comprises a surface elevated from adjacent areas of said catheter connector assembly and on which said one or more hub electrical contacts are positioned. 9. The catheter system of claim 8 , wherein said elevated surface further comprises sloped surfaces. 10. The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein said electrical interface is configured to obtain data from said catheter and store said data in a database. 11. A catheter hub configured for connecting to a catheter, comprising: a hub body having a hub passage extending between a proximal end and a distal end of said hub body; a catheter connector assembly having a plurality of hub electrical contacts configured to communicate with an electrical interface; said catheter connector assembly positioned adjacent to said hub passage and along an edge of said hub body; and an engagement mechanism configured to engage an interface connector assembly of said electrical interface and block fluid contact with said plurality of hub electrical contacts; said engagement mechanism comprising a first magnet positioned on a surface perpendicular to said plurality of hub electrical contacts; wherein said interface connector assembly comprises a second magnet positioned perpendicular to a plurality of interface electrical contacts on said interface connector assembly; and wherein said engagement mechanism further comprises third and fourth magnets positioned on each end of said plurality of hub electrical contacts, and fifth and sixth magnets positioned on each end of said plurality of interface electrical contacts. 12. The catheter hub of claim 11 , wherein said engagement mechanism comprises a plurality of raised structures configured to fictionally engage said interface connector assembly. 13. The catheter hub of claim 11 , further comprising a depression positioned around said plurality of hub electrical contacts. 14. The catheter hub of claim 11 , wherein said plurality of hub electrical contacts are either depressed relative to a surrounding surface, or elevated relative to said surrounding surface. 15. A catheter system comprising: a catheter body having a catheter electrical path extending between a proximal and a distal end of said catheter body, said electrical path being in electrical communication with an electrically powered device located at said distal end of said catheter body; and, a hub connected to said proximal end of said catheter body and having a top surface and a side surface; said hub having a hub electrical path connected to said catheter electrical path and connected to a hub connection assembly; said hub having a depressed area extending into said top surface and said side surface of said hub; wherein said hub connection assembly has a plurality of hub electrical contacts located in said depressed area and facing a first direction and a first magnet located on said side surface of said hub that is adjacent to said plurality of hub electrical contacts and that is facing a second direction different than said first direction. 16. The catheter system of claim 15 , wherein said plurality of hub electrical contacts are arranged linearly; wherein said hub connection assembly further comprises a second magnet and a third magnet that both face in said first direction; and wherein an electrical interface has a fourth, fifth, and sixth magnet that engage with said first, second, and third magnets of said hub connection assembly. 17. A catheter hub configured for connecting to a catheter, comprising: a catheter connector assembly having a plurality of hub electrical contacts configured to communicate with an electrical interface; and an engagement mechanism configured to engage an interface connector assembly of said electrical interface and block fluid contact with said plurality of hub electrical contacts; said engagement mechanism comprising a first magnet positioned on a surface perpendicular to said plurality of hub electrical contacts; wherein said interface connector assembly comprises a second magnet positioned perpendicular to a plurality of interface electrical contacts on said interface connector assembly; and, wherein said engagement mechanism further comprises third and fourth magnets positioned on each end of said plurality of hub electrical contacts, and fifth and sixth magnets positioned on each end of said plurality of interface electrical contacts.
