Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various operational mode arrangements of an electric toothbrush (10) include pre-programming a controller portion (16) of the electric toothbrush such that a single brushing event of approximately two minutes comprises automatically at least two different operating modes and specified times for each mode. Another operational mode includes the capability of operating the on/off button (20) of the toothbrush within a specified short time following termination of a normal brushing event to provide the user a specified additional time, e.g. 30 seconds of toothbrush action. A special toothbrush interface arrangement includes a display (80) which encourages children to maintain brushing for the full brushing period. This is accomplished through sequential illustration of the progress of an article from an initial state to a final desired state as the toothbrush is used for increasing portions of a full brushing time period. In another embodiment, a toothbrush (120) includes a capability of adjusting the performance/operating characteristics in accordance with the age of a child user.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system for adjusting operating characteristics of a power toothbrush for use by children at various ages, comprising: a power toothbrush responsive to instructions from an internal or external source to adjust operating characteristics of the toothbrush carried out by a control system, associated with a selected age of a child user; and an entry system for initiating operation of the power toothbrush at a selected level of operating characteristics, and wherein the operating characteristics are provided by a first skin assembly which fits over the toothbrush which corresponds to a first age of the user and a second skin assembly which fits over the toothbrush which corresponds to a second age of the user, where the first age of the user and the second age of the user are different. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the internal source is a stored program which automatically adjusts the operating characteristics is produced by the control system in accordance with the age of the user. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the initiating operation is carried out by an RFID chip. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the initiating operation is carried out by buttons on the toothbrush communicating with the control system. 5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a communication system for initiating operation of or providing the operating characteristics to the toothbrush. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the communicating system comprises contact elements which make contact with receiving elements on the toothbrush. 7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the communicating system comprises an RFID member or magnet assembly in the skin assembly and a receiving assembly on the toothbrush. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operating characteristics include a selected one or more of the following: amplitude, frequency, time of operation and brushing pressure. 9. The system of claim 1 wherein the power toothbrush further comprises: a display device for a power toothbrush which is in use, the display device including a display program in which a selected article progresses visually from an initial state to a final desired state as use of the toothbrush continues from the time it is turned on to the end of a desired time period for a brushing event, and wherein the selected article proceeds through a first progression of a first plurality of images when a user brushes for at least the desired time period, and proceeds through a second progression of a second plurality of images when the user fails to brush for at least the desired time period; wherein at least the second progression of the second plurality of images depends upon the difference between an actual use time of the power toothbrush during the brushing event and the desired time period for the brushing event. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the display device is separate from the power toothbrush. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the display device is part of the power toothbrush. 12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the desired time period is approximately two minutes. 13. The system of claim 9 , including audio material accompanying the display. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the selected article is an image of a face with the teeth thereof being shown with an indication of the teeth which are being currently and which have been previously brushed during the desired time period. 15. The system of claim 9 , including a data display showing brushing use of the toothbrush by the child. 16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first plurality of images and the second plurality of images are floral images. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the selected article is a flower and the first plurality of images progress through an image of the flower growing or blooming and the second plurality of images progresses through the flower wilting or regressing.
