Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for a media content user interface. A media content provider includes storage for storing and serving video content to subscribers. The media content provider records and or otherwise stores video content from around the world. Subscribers are provided a user interface to the system that includes a channel bar. The channel bar is dynamically scoped responsive to interactions of a viewer with the system. Selectable elements within the channel bar provide direct access to related content regarding video content, such as television series information and cast information. In addition, the channel bar is operable in multiple modes. An EPG mode displays live video for multiple channels simultaneously. Themed modes permit channel bars that display content according to various themes which may be defined by a viewer, the provider, or both.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: at an electronic device: displaying, on a display, a first media item; while displaying the first media item, receiving a trigger to display information about additional media items; in response to receiving the trigger to display the information about the additional media items, displaying, overlaid on at least a portion of the first media item, a plurality of representations of additional media items, wherein: the additional media items are available for viewing by the electronic device from a plurality of media sources and are selected based on one or more selection criteria, including past activity of a user of the electronic device; and a first representation of the plurality of representations of additional media items corresponding to a first additional media item includes a first media portion of content associated with the first additional media item, wherein a second representation of the plurality of representations of additional media items corresponding to a first collection of episodic media has a current focus; while displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item and while displaying the first media item, receiving, via one or more input devices, a first user input for causing the first representation corresponding to the first additional media item to have the current focus; in response to receiving the first user input, playing a second media portion of the content associated with the first additional media item, different from the first media portion of the content associated with the first additional media item, while maintaining display of the first media item; while displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item, receiving, via the one or more input devices, a sequence of inputs including an input selecting a respective representation of the plurality of representations; and in response to receiving the sequence of inputs selecting the respective representation: in accordance with a determination that the respective representation is the first representation, displaying, on the display, the first additional media item; and in accordance with a determination that the respective representation is the second representation, displaying, on the display, a landing page associated with the first collection of episodic media. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of representations of additional media items are arranged in a row. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the representations of additional media items includes video content representative of their corresponding additional media items. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item includes playing the first media item on the display while displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the trigger to display the information about the additional media items includes receiving an input from a remote control device. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the additional media items include one or more media items that the user has authorization to access. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the additional media items include one or more media items that the user does not have authorization to access. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: while displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item, receiving, via the one or more input devices, a scrolling input; and in response to receiving the scrolling input, displaying, overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item, additional representations of additional media items. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content associated with the first additional media item includes audio and video content. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first additional media item is a live broadcast. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second media portion of the content associated with the first additional media item corresponds to a live broadcast. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the landing page associated with the first collection of episodic media includes an affordance that is selectable to display a given episode of the first collection of episodic media. 13. An electronic device, comprising: one or more processors; memory; and one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: displaying, on a display, a first media item; while displaying the first media item, receiving a trigger to display information about additional media items; in response to receiving the trigger to display the information about the additional media items, displaying, overlaid on at least a portion of the first media item, a plurality of representations of additional media items, wherein: the additional media items are available for viewing by the electronic device from a plurality of media sources and are selected based on one or more selection criteria, including past activity of a user of the electronic device; and a first representation of the plurality of representations of additional media items corresponding to a first additional media item includes a first media portion of content associated with the first additional media item, wherein a second representation of the plurality of representations of additional media items corresponding to a first collection of episodic media has a current focus; while displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item and while displaying the first media item, receiving, via one or more input devices, a first user input for causing the first representation corresponding to the first additional media item to have the current focus; in response to receiving the first user input, playing a second media portion of the content associated with the first additional media item, different from the first media portion of the content associated with the first additional media item, while maintaining display of the first media item; while displaying the plurality of representations of additional media items overlaid on the at least the portion of the first media item, receiving, via the one or more input devices, a sequence of inputs including an input selecting a respective representation of the plurality of representations; and in response to receiving the sequence of inputs selecting the respective representation: in accordance with a determination that the respective representation is the first representation, displaying, on the display, the first additional media item; and in accordance with a determination that the respective representation is the second representation, displaying, on the display, a landing page associated with the first collection of episodic media. 14. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of representations of additional media items are arranged in a row. 15.
