Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for heating a handgrip of a vehicle. One system includes a first handgrip including a first heating element and a first temperature sensor and a second handgrip including a second heating element and a second temperature sensor. The system further includes a polarity switching circuit configured to provide power, when active in a first polarity, to the second temperature sensor and provide power, when in a second polarity, to the second heating element. The system includes an electronic processor configured to receive, when the polarity switching circuit is active in the first polarity, a temperature signal from the second temperature sensor, compare the temperature signal to a predetermined threshold, and set, in response to the temperature signal failing to exceed the predetermined temperature threshold, the polarity switching circuit to the second polarity.

What is claimed is: 1. A heated handgrip system including: a first handgrip including a first heating element and a first temperature sensor configured to produce a temperature signal indicative of a temperature related to the first heating element; a second handgrip including a second heating element and a second temperature sensor configured to produce a temperature signal indicative of a temperature related to the second heating element; a polarity switching circuit electrically coupled to the second temperature sensor and the second heating element and configured to provide power, when active in a first polarity, to the first temperature sensor and provide power, when in a second polarity, to the first heating element; and an electronic processor communicatively coupled to the polarity switching circuit, the electronic processor configured to receive, when the polarity switching circuit is active in the first polarity, a temperature signal from the second temperature sensor; compare the temperature signal to a predetermined temperature threshold, and set, in response to the first temperature signal failing to exceed the predetermined temperature threshold, the polarity switching circuit to the second polarity. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic processor is housed outside of the second handgrip. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the electronic processor is housed in the first handgrip. 4. The system of claim 2 further comprising a second polarity switching circuit electrically coupled to the first temperature sensor and the first heating element and configured to provide power, when active in a first polarity, to the first temperature sensor and provide power, when in a second polarity, to the first heating element. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second temperature sensor and the second heating element are electrically coupled to the polarity switching circuit via two wires. 6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a first grip sensor configured to detect a grip of a user on the first handgrip and a second grip sensor configured to detect a grip of the user on the second handgrip and wherein the electronic processor is further configured to provide power to each of the first heating element and the second heating element in response to detecting, via the grip sensor, the grip on the first handgrip and the second handgrip respectively. 7. A heated handgrip including: a heating element; a temperature sensor configured to produce a temperature signal indicative of a temperature related to the heating element; a polarity switching circuit electrically coupled to the temperature sensor and the heating element and configured to provide power, when active in a first polarity, to the temperature sensor and provide power, when in a second polarity, to the heating element; and an electronic processor communicatively coupled to the polarity switching circuit, the electronic processor configured to receive, when the polarity switching circuit is active in the first polarity, a temperature signal from the temperature sensor; compare the temperature signal to a predetermined temperature threshold, and set, in response to the temperature signal failing to exceed the predetermined temperature threshold, the polarity switching circuit to the second polarity. 8. The heated handgrip of claim 7 , wherein the electronic processor is housed outside of the handgrip. 9. The heated handgrip of claim 8 , wherein the electronic processor is housed in a second handgrip. 10. The heated handgrip of claim 8 wherein the electronic processor is communicatively coupled to a second polarity switching circuit electrically coupled to a second temperature sensor and a second heating element in a second heated handgrip and wherein the electronic processor is further configured to provide power to the second temperature sensor by activating the second polarity switching circuit in a first polarity and provide power to the second heating element by activating the second polarity switching circuit in a second polarity. 11. The heated handgrip of claim 7 , wherein the temperature sensor and the heating element are electrically coupled to the polarity switching circuit via two wires. 12. The heated handgrip of claim 7 further comprising a grip sensor configured to detect a grip of a user on the handgrip and wherein the electronic processor is further configured to provide power to the heating element in response to detecting, via the grip sensor, the grip on the handgrip. 13. A method of heating a handgrip, the method comprising providing power to a temperature sensor associated with the handgrip through an H-bridge in a first polarity; receiving, while the polarity switching circuit is active in the first polarity, a temperature signal from the temperature sensor; comparing, via an electronic processor, the temperature signal to a predetermined temperature threshold; and in response to the temperature signal exceeding the predetermined temperature threshold, providing power to a heating element associated with the handgrip by setting, via the electronic processor, the polarity switching circuit to the second polarity. 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising: providing power to a second temperature sensor through a second polarity switching circuit in a first polarity; receiving, while the second polarity switching circuit is active in the first polarity, a second temperature signal from the temperature sensor; comparing, via the electronic processor, the second temperature signal to a second predetermined temperature threshold; providing power to a second heating element by setting, via the electronic processor, in response to the second temperature signal exceeding the predetermined temperature threshold, the second polarity switching circuit to the second polarity. 15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the temperature sensor and the heating element are electrically coupled to the polarity switching circuit via two wires. 16. The method of claim 13 further comprising detecting, via a grip sensor, a grip of a user on the handgrip, and discontinuing power to the polarity switching circuit in response to detecting, via the grip sensor, no grip on the handgrip.
