Official abstract text for this publication.
A computer-implemented system and method for providing information tagging in a networked system is disclosed. The apparatus in an example embodiment includes a tag engine configured to process a database of categorized product listings; to receive a user-provided tag associated with at least one of the product listings; to retain the user-provided tag; and to serve the user-provided tag to a user viewing at least one of the product listings.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving user-approved tags for item listings stored in association with a first item located in an item listing database; for each of the user-approved tags determining a popularity score and an item count associated with an item attribute, wherein the popularity score for a specific tag of the user-approved tags indicates a frequency of occurrence of the specified tag and the item count for the specific tag indicates a number of occurrences of the specific tag; selecting a popularity score threshold based on the popularity score for each of the user-approved tags; selecting an item count threshold based on the item count for the user-approved tags; generating a graduated set of tags by identifying a portion of the user-approved tags, wherein at least one of the popularity score or the item count of each of the user-approved tags of the identified portion of the user-approved tags exceeds at least one of the popularity score threshold or the item count threshold; and causing display of at least a portion of the item listings based on the graduated set of tags. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the graduated set of tags is indexed to a seller tag namespace, the seller tag namespace being available to a seller for navigating the item listings, wherein the seller provides an item for sale on a host website. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each tag, of the user-approved tags, includes one or more name/value pairs for one or more attributes of the item listings. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying, from the user-approved tags, one or more tag clusters based on the popularity score and the item count associated with the item attribute, wherein tag clusters are generated by employing a statistical analysis of the popularity scores and the item counts of the tags. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: indexing the item listings based on the graduated set of tags; and causing display of a portion of the plurality of item listings based on the indexed item listings. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the popularity score of each of the graduated set of tags of the user-approved tags exceeds the popularity score threshold and the item count of each of the graduated set of tags of the user-approved tags exceeds the item count threshold. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: updating the graduated set of tags by adding eligible new tags to the graduated set of tags and removing ineligible tags from the graduated set of tags, wherein the tag recommendation for the new item listing is derived from the updated tags. 8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising: determining a priority order of tags within the updated tags based on the popularity score; and causing display of a list of one or more name/value pairs associated with the updated tags based on the priority order. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein adding eligible new tags to the graduated set of tags further comprises determining new tags that meet at least one of the popularity score or the item count thresholds for the graduated set of tags. 10. The method of claim 7 , wherein removing ineligible tags from the graduated set of tags further comprises determining tags within the graduated set of tags that do not meet at least one of the popularity score or the item count thresholds for the graduated set of tags. 11. A system comprising: at least one processor; memory to store instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to perform actions comprising: receiving user-approved tags for item listings stored in association with an item listing database, each tag of the user-approved tags corresponding to a manner that a first item is described by a respective user; determining, from the user-approved tags, a popularity score or an item count associated with an item attribute, wherein the popularity score for a specific tag indicates a frequency of occurrence of the specific tag and the item count for the specific tag indicates a number of occurrences of the specific tag; selecting at least one of: a popularity score threshold based on the popularity score for each of the user-approved tags or an item count threshold based on the item count for the user-approved tags; generating a graduated set of tags by identifying a portion of the user-approved tags, wherein at least one of the popularity score or the item count of each of the user-approved tags of the identified portion of the user-approved tags exceeds at least one of the popularity score threshold or the item count threshold; and causing display of at least a portion of the item listings based on the graduated set of tags. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the graduated set of tags is indexed to a seller tag namespace, the seller tag namespace being available to a seller for navigating the item listings, wherein the seller provides an item for sale on a host website. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein each tag of the graduated set of tags includes one or more name/value pairs for one or more attributes of the item listings. 14. The system of claim 11 , the actions further comprising identifying, from the user-approved tags, one or more tag clusters based on the popularity score and the item count associated with the item attribute, wherein tag clusters are generated by complying a statistical analysis of the popularity scores and the item counts of the user-approved tags. 15. The system of claim 11 , the actions further comprising: indexing the item listings based on the graduated set of tags; and causing display of a portion of the item listings based on the indexed item listings. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the popularity score of each of the tags of the graduated subset of tags exceeds the popularity score threshold and the time count of each of the tags of the graduated set of tags exceeds the item count threshold. 17. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon, which when executed by a processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to perform actions comprising: receiving tags for item listings stored in association with a first item located in an item listing database, each tag of the tags corresponding to a manner that the first item is described by a respective user; determining, for the first item and from the tags, a popularity score or an item count associated with an item attribute, wherein the popularity score for a specific tag of the tags indicates a frequency of occurrence of the specific tag and the item count for the specific tag indicates a number of occurrences of the specific tag; selecting at least one of: a popularity score threshold based on the popularity score for each of the tags or an item count threshold based on the item count for the user-approved tags; generating a graduated set of tags by identifying a portion of the tags, wherein at least one of the popularity score or the item count of each of the tags of the identified portion of the tags exceeds at least one of the popularity score threshold or the item count threshold; and causing display of at least a portion of the item listings based on the graduated set of tags. 18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , further comprising updating the graduated set of tags by adding eligible new tags to the graduated set of tags and removing ineligible tags from the graduated set of tags, wherein the tag recommendation for the new ite
