Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

System and method utilizing a reconfigurable in real-time phase-modulating diffractive device (in a specific case—a 2D array of micro-mirror elements) in conjunction with another diffractive element (active or passive) to spatially steer a beam of polychromatic light such that light reaches the identified target without being substantially angularly dispersed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for relaying a light beam through an optical system, the method comprising: changing a degree of divergence of a polychromatic beam having a polychromatic spectrum by forming a first light output as a result of diffraction of said polychromatic beam at a first diffraction element, said first light output containing light at substantially all wavelengths present in the polychromatic spectrum; diffracting said first light output at a second diffractive element to form a second light output in which light at any wavelength from said spectrum propagates in the same direction with respect to a reference axis; and dynamically varying a distribution of phase across a wavefront of a light beam that has diffracted at a diffractive element, from the first and second diffractive elements, as compared to a wavefront of a light beam that is incident onto said diffractive element, by dynamically varying a geometrical characteristic of said diffractive element in real time. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the changing a degree of divergence of a polychromatic beam includes changing the degree of divergence of the polychromatic beam that is substantially collimated, and wherein the reference axis is perpendicular to an output surface of the second diffractive element. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein any of said changing and said diffracting the first light output is effectuated via interacting of light with a two-dimensional (2D) array of micro-reflectors, wherein an operation of each of said micro-reflectors from the 2D array is defined by discrete spatial repositioning of such micro-reflector. 4. The method according to claim 3 , further comprising repositioning at least one micro-reflector from said 2D array between corresponding first and second spatial orientations by tangentially-parallel translation of said micro-reflector along the reference axis. 5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising changing an angle of propagation of the second light output with respect to the reference axis by reconfiguring the second diffractive element. 6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein at least one of the following conditions is satisfied: a) said changing an angle of propagation includes changing the angle of propagation of the second light output while keeping the second light output substantially collimated; and b) said reconfiguring includes chirping a period of a diffraction grating formed at the second diffractive element. 7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising operating the optical system in a monostatic fashion. 8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said diffracting the first light output at a second diffractive element includes forming the second light output that is substantially collimated. 9. A method for relaying a light beam through an optical system, the method comprising sequentially diffracting light of a polychromatic beam at a first diffractive element and at a second diffractive element that are disposed in optical communication with one another, the polychromatic beam having a first geometrical parameter; wherein the first diffractive element is configured to form a first diffracted beam, the first diffractive beam having a second geometrical parameter that corresponds to the first geometrical parameter; wherein the second geometrical parameter is different in value from the first geometrical parameter, and wherein the second diffractive element is configured to form a second diffracted beam by diffracting the first diffracted beam and to restore a third geometrical parameter of the second diffracted beam to be equal to the first geometrical parameter of the polychromatic beam while keeping a wavelength spectrum of light contained in the polychromatic beam substantially unchanged upon propagation of said light through said optical system. 10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein said sequentially diffracting includes receiving a substantially collimated polychromatic beam at the first diffractive element and forming the first diffracted beam that is spatially diverging. 11. The method according to claim 9 , comprising changing an operational characteristic of the second diffractive element to spatially steer the second diffracted beam while keeping said second diffracted beam substantially collimated, the second diffracted beam containing light at multiple wavelengths. 12. The method according to claim 9 , comprising while spatially steering the polychromatic beam, forming said second diffracted beam that is directed along an axis that is transverse to an output surface of the second diffractive element regardless of an angle of incidence of the polychromatic beam onto the first diffractive element. 13. A method for relaying a light beam through an optical system, the method comprising: changing a degree of divergence of a polychromatic beam having a polychromatic spectrum by forming a first light output as a result of diffraction of said polychromatic beam at a first diffraction element, said first light output containing light at substantially all wavelengths present in the polychromatic spectrum; diffracting said first light output at a second diffractive element to form a second light output in which light at any wavelength from said spectrum propagates in the same direction with respect to a reference axis; wherein any of said changing and said diffracting is effectuated via interacting of light with a two-dimensional (2D) array of micro-reflectors, wherein an operation of each of said micro-reflectors from the 2D array is defined by discrete spatial repositioning of such micro-reflector. 14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said changing a degree of divergence of a polychromatic beam includes changing the degree of divergence of the polychromatic beam that is substantially collimated, and wherein the reference axis is perpendicular to an output surface of the second diffractive element. 15. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising repositioning at least one micro-reflector from said 2D array between corresponding first and second spatial orientations by tangentially-parallel translation of said micro-reflector along the reference axis. 16. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising changing an angle of propagation of the second light output with respect to the reference axis by reconfiguring the second diffractive element. 17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein at least one of the following conditions is satisfied: a) said changing an angle of propagation includes changing the angle of propagation of the second light output while keeping the second light output substantially collimated; and b) said reconfiguring includes chirping a period of a diffraction grating formed at the second diffractive element. 18. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising operating the optical system in a monostatic fashion. 19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said diffracting the first light output at a second diffractive element includes forming the second light output that is substantially collimated.
