Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical stapling apparatus can comprise, in various instances, a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein, a firing system configured to eject the staples from the staple cartridge, and an electric motor configured to drive the firing system. The stapling apparatus can further comprise a lockout system configured to, one, detect whether a first jaw is in an open position or a closed position relative to a second jaw and, two, prevent the electric motor from driving the firing system when the first jaw is not in a closed position.

We claim: 1. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a handle, comprising: a gripping portion; an electric motor; and a battery configured to supply electrical power to said electric motor; a shaft extending from said handle; an end effector, comprising: a cartridge support configured to support a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and an anvil configured to deform said staples; a closure system comprising a closure actuator, wherein said closure system is configured to perform a closing operation in which said anvil is moved relative to said cartridge support between an open position and a closed position in response to an actuation of said closure actuator; a firing system comprising a firing actuator, wherein said firing system is operable by said electric motor and configured to perform a firing operation in which said staples are elected from said staple cartridge in response to an actuation of said firing actuator; and an electronic lockout system configured to prevent said firing operation despite the actuation of said firing actuator when said anvil is not in said closed position based on output from said closing operation, wherein said electronic lockout system comprises: a series of switches; a force sensor responsive to the clamping force applied to said staple cartridge by said anvil at least when clamping tissue therebetween before said firing operation; and an indicator configured to display output from said electronic lockout system. 2. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said series of switches comprises a contact-actuated switch. 3. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said series of switches comprises a non-contact-actuated switch. 4. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said electronic lockout system further comprises a timer configured to maintain said battery in an electrically decoupled state for a pre-determined time delay after said anvil has been moved into said closed position. 5. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable about said articulation joint. 6. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said firing system comprises: a first camming member configured to engage said cartridge support; and a second camming member configured to engage said anvil, wherein said firing system is configured to position said anvil relative to said cartridge support. 7. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said end effector comprises a distal end, wherein said firing system comprises a firing member, and wherein said handle further comprises: said closure actuator, wherein the actuation of said closure actuator is configured to move said anvil into said closed position; and said firing actuator, wherein the actuation of said firing actuator is configured to move said firing member to said distal end. 8. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said end effector comprises a distal end, wherein said firing system comprises a firing member, and wherein said electronic lockout system further comprises a light emitting diode configured to indicate whether said firing system said firing member can be advanced to said distal end by said electric motor. 9. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a housing comprising an electric motor and a battery; a shaft extending from said housing; an end effector, comprising: a first jaw; a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an open position and a closed position; a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and an anvil configured to deform said staples; a closure system comprising a closure actuator, wherein said closure system is configured to perform a closing operation in which said first jaw is moved from said open position to said closed position in response to an actuation of said closure actuator; a firing system comprising a firing actuator, wherein said firing system is operable by said electric motor and configured to perform a firing operation in which said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge in response to an actuation of said firing actuator; and an interlock circuit configured to prevent said firing operation despite the actuation of said firing actuator when said first jaw is in said open position based on output from said closing operation, wherein said interlock circuit comprises: a plurality of switches; a force sensor configured to detect the clamping force between said staple cartridge and said anvil at least when clamping tissue therebetween before said firing operation; and an indicator configured to display output from said interlock circuit. 10. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said interlock circuit further comprises a timer configured to maintain said battery in an electrically decoupled state from said electric motor for a pre-determined time delay after said first jaw has been moved into said closed position. 11. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable about said articulation joint. 12. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a firing member, wherein said firing member comprises: a first camming member configured to engage said first jaw; and a second camming member configured to engage said second jaw, wherein said firing system is configured to position said first jaw relative to said second jaw. 13. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a firing member, wherein said end effector comprises a distal end, and wherein said housing further comprises: said closure actuator, wherein the actuation of said closure actuator is configured to move said first jaw into said closed position; and said firing actuator, wherein the actuation of said firing actuator is configured to move said firing member to said distal end. 14. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a firing member, wherein said end effector comprises a distal end, and wherein said interlock circuit further comprises a light emitting diode configured to indicate whether said firing member can be advanced to said distal end by said electric motor. 15. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising: a handle, comprising: a gripping portion; and an electric motor; a shaft extending from said handle; an end effector, comprising: a proximal end; a distal end; a first jaw; a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw; a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and an anvil configured to deform said staples; a closure system comprising a closure actuator, wherein said closure system is configured to perform a closing operation in which said first jaw is moved to a closed position relative to said second jaw in response to an actuation of said closure actuator; a firing system comprising a firing actuator, wherein said firing system is operable by said electric motor and configured to perform a firing operation in which said staples are elected from said staple cartridge in response to an actuation of said firing actuator; and an electronic lockout system configured to prevent said electric motor from implementing said firing operation despite the actuation of said firing actuator when said first jaw is not in said closed position based on output from said closing operation, wherein said electronic lockout system comprises: a
