Official abstract text for this publication.
A fluid valve includes a valve body and a plug. The body includes a chamber and ports that communicate with the chamber. The plug rotates within the chamber, and includes a seal disposed in an annular groove provided on the plug surface. An elastic member is disposed in the groove, and biases the seal against an inner surface of the chamber. When the plug is oriented relative to the body so that the groove is aligned with a port, the seal segregates the chamber into a first chamber that borders an outer surface of the seal and a second chamber that borders an inner surface of the seal, and provides a fluid-tight seal between the first chamber and the second chamber. In addition, the seal inner and outer diameters vary based on a fluid pressure difference across the seal.

What is claimed, is: 1. A fluid valve comprising: a valve body including: a valve plug chamber; and valve ports, each valve port communicating with the valve plug chamber, a valve plug that is disposed in the valve plug chamber and is rotatable relative to the valve body about a rotational axis, the valve plug including: a fluid passageway that, in certain rotational orientations of the valve plug relative to the valve body, provides a fluid path that extends between a first one of the valve ports and a second one of the valve ports; a blind hole provided in a side of the valve plug opposed to the fluid passageway, a groove that surrounds the blind hole, the groove having a groove inner wall that is shared with the blind hole and a groove outer wall that surrounds the groove inner wall and is spaced apart from the groove inner wall; an annular seal that is disposed in the groove, the seal having a seal inner diameter and a seal outer diameter; and an elastic member that is disposed in the groove between a blind end of the groove and the seal, the elastic member providing a force that directs the seal against an inner surface of the valve plug chamber, wherein when the valve plug is rotationally oriented relative to the valve body so that the blind hole is aligned with any one of the valve ports, the seal segregates the valve plug chamber into a first chamber that borders an outer surface of the seal and a second chamber that borders an inner surface of the seal, and provides a fluid-tight seal between the first chamber and the second chamber, and the seal inner diameter and the seal outer diameter vary based on a fluid pressure difference, where the fluid pressure difference is a difference between a pressure of the fluid in the first chamber and a pressure of the fluid in the second chamber. 2. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein when the fluid pressure difference has a valve of zero, the seal inner diameter is larger than a diameter of the groove inner wall, the seal outer diameter is smaller than a diameter of the groove outer wall, and the elastic member provides a force that moves the seal against the valve body inner surface. 3. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein when a fluid pressure in the first chamber is greater than a fluid pressure in the second chamber, the seal contracts such that the seal inner diameter decreases and the inner surface of the seal contacts, and forms a fluid-tight seal with, the groove inner wall, and when a fluid pressure in the first chamber is less than a fluid pressure in the second chamber, the seal expands such that the seal outer diameter increases and the outer surface of the seal contacts, and forms a fluid-tight seal with, the groove outer wall. 4. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein when the fluid pressure difference has a non-zero value, the seal directly contacts, and forms a fluid-tight seal with, a) the valve body, and b) one of the groove inner wall and the groove outer wall. 5. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein the seal is a hollow, cylindrical member, the outer surface of the seal faces the groove outer wall, and the outer surface of the seal has an annular protrusion that extends about an outer circumference of the seal. 6. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein the seal is a hollow, cylindrical member, the inner surface of the seal faces the groove inner wall, and the inner surface of the seal has an annular protrusion that extends about an inner circumference of the seal. 7. The fluid valve of claim 1 , Wherein the seal is a hollow, cylindrical member that includes a seal outer end that faces the valve body inner surface, and a seal inner end that is opposed to the seal outer end, the seal inner end facing the elastic member, wherein the seal outer end includes an annular concavity that is recessed relative to a first edge of the seal outer end and a second edge of the seal outer end, the first edge of the seal outer end located at an intersection of the seal outer end and the outer surface of the seal, the second edge of the seal outer end located at an intersection of the seal outer end and the inner surface of the seal. 8. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the outer surface of the seal that faces an inner surface of the valve plug chamber has a lower coefficient of friction than a second portion of the seal that is spaced apart from the first portion. 9. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein the elastic member is one of a coil spring, a wave spring or a wave washer. 10. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein the fluid passageway is linear and extends in parallel to a first plug transverse axis that is perpendicular to the rotational axis, and when the valve plug is rotationally oriented relative to the valve body so that the blind hole is aligned with a third one of the valve ports, the blind hole is concentric with a second plug transverse axis that is perpendicular to the rotational axis and the first plug transverse axis. 11. The fluid valve of claim 1 , wherein the valve body comprises: a base; and a sidewall that protrudes from the periphery of the base in a direction parallel to the rotational axis; wherein the first one of the valve ports is provided in the sidewall, the first one of the valve ports being concentric with a first valve body transverse axis that is a) perpendicular to the rotational axis, and b) intersects the rotational axis, and a third one of the valve ports is provided in the sidewall, the third one of the valve ports being concentric with a second valve body transverse axis that is a) perpendicular to the rotational axis, b) perpendicular to the first valve body transverse axis, and c) intersects the rotational axis. 12.
