Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for manufacturing a filter includes providing a computer-readable three-dimensional model of the filter, the three-dimensional model being configured to be converted into a plurality of slices that each define a cross-sectional layer of the filter, and successively forming each layer of the filter by additive manufacturing.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A filter comprising: a housing; and a filter medium including a plurality of layers of solidified material; wherein at least one of the plurality of layers of solidified material includes a first layer including a first undulating strip of solidified material extending in a first predetermined direction, and a second layer with a second undulating strip of solidified material extending in a second predetermined direction, and the first layer is in contact with the second layer and the first predetermined direction is not parallel with the second predetermined direction, forming at least one pore that defines a minimum dimension that is between 50 μm to 200 μm, and at least one of the plurality of layers of solidified material includes an undulating strip of material arranged in a trapezoidal pattern in a plane parallel to the first predetermined direction such that trapezoidal pattern includes two non-parallel legs. 2. The filter of claim 1 wherein the first predetermined direction is perpendicular to the second predetermined direction. 3. The filter of claim 2 wherein the first undulating strip of solidified material is arranged in the trapezoidal pattern in a plane parallel to the first predetermined direction and the second undulating strip of solidified material is arranged in a square pattern in a plane parallel to the second predetermined direction such that square pattern includes legs that are parallel. 4. The filter of claim 3 wherein the trapezoidal pattern at least partially defines a plurality of pores, each of the plurality of pores including a pore dimension that decreases in size along the second predetermined direction. 5. A filter comprising: a housing including an outer wall and an inner wall, wherein the outer wall and the inner wall define the same longitudinal axis, the inner wall defines a radial direction that passes through the longitudinal axis and that is perpendicular thereto, and a circumferential direction that is tangential to the radial direction and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and the inner wall is spaced radially away from the outer wall, the housing further defining a first end and a second end disposed along the longitudinal axis and a hollow interior; an inlet in fluid communication with the hollow interior; an outlet in fluid communication with the hollow interior; a filter medium disposed in the hollow interior comprising a plurality of layers, wherein each layer includes an undulating strip of solidified material, and defines a plurality of pores that define a minimum dimension that ranges from 50 μm to 200 μm; and a cap portion including a first plurality of layers of solidified material including a first layer with a first undulating strip of solidified material extending in a first predetermined direction and a second layer with a second undulating strip of solidified material extending in a second predetermined direction, and the first layer is in contact with the second layer and the first predetermined direction is not parallel with the second predetermined direction; a bottom portion including a second plurality of layers of solidified material including a third layer with a third undulating strip of solidified material extending in a third predetermined direction and a fourth layer with a fourth undulating strip of solidified material extending in a fourth predetermined direction, and the third layer is in contact with the fourth layer and the third predetermined direction is not parallel with the fourth predetermined direction; and wherein the undulations of the cap portion and the undulations of the bottom portion are out of phase with each other. 6. The filter of claim 5 wherein the filter medium includes an annular shape defining an outer annular region and an inner annular region and the hollow interior includes an outer annular chamber in fluid communication with the inlet and the outer annular region of the filter medium and a central cylindrical void concentric about the longitudinal axis that is in fluid communication with the outlet and the inner annular region of the filter medium. 7. The filter of claim 6 wherein the inner wall defines the outlet and includes internal threads. 8. The filter of claim 7 wherein the housing defines a top surface and the inlet is a first cylindrical hole extending from the top surface to the outer annular chamber and the outlet extends from the top surface to the central cylindrical void. 9. The filter of claim 8 further comprising a plurality of identically configured inlets arranged in a circular array about the longitudinal axis. 10. The filter of claim 5 wherein the housing is seamless.
