A portable device and associated method are described for use with a system in which a locating signal is transmitted from within the ground during an operational procedure. The locating signal includes a transmission frequency that is selectable from a group of discrete transmission frequencies in a frequency range and the region includes electromagnetic noise that can vary. The portable device includes a receiver having a bandwidth that includes the transmission frequency range and is operable for measuring the electromagnetic noise in the transmission frequency range to establish a frequency content of the electromagnetic noise for use in selecting one of the discrete transmission frequencies that is subsequently transmitted as the locating signal during the operational procedure. The locating signal can be transmitted from a boring tool, a pullback arrangement or an inground cable. A predicted maximum operational depth for a transmitter can be determined prior to the operational procedure.

What is claimed is: 1. A portable device for use in conjunction with a system in which a transmitter is moved through the ground in a region during an operational procedure while transmitting a transmitter signal having a transmission frequency in a transmission frequency range and said region includes electromagnetic noise that varies within said region and across said transmission frequency range, said portable device comprising: a receiver having a receiver bandwidth that at least includes said transmission frequency range and said receiver is configured (i) to continuously measure the electromagnetic noise at multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies spaced across said transmission frequency range at a plurality of locations along a path and (ii) derive one or more indications for each one of the discrete frequencies at each of said locations and (iii) to continuously update the indications in real time for use in selecting one of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies as a selected transmission frequency; and a display that is configured to present at least one of the updated indications. 2. The portable device of claim 1 wherein said receiver determines a predicted maximum usable operational depth for one or more of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies for subsequent reception during the operational procedure. 3. The portable device of claim 2 wherein said display displays the predicted maximum usable operational depth as at least one of said indications. 4. The portable device of claim 2 including a user input arrangement for receiving one or more user interactions to identify one or more of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies for which the predicted maximum usable operational depth is displayed. 5. The portable device of claim 2 including a user input arrangement for receiving one or more user interactions to identify one or more of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies for which the predicted maximum usable operational depth is displayed and to limit the display indications to the one or more multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies without displaying the predicted maximum usable operational depth associated with any discrete transmission frequencies not chosen in the user interactions. 6. The portable device of claim 1 wherein said receiver is configured to automatically select one of the multiple predetermined discrete frequencies as the selected transmission frequency based on the measured noise such that the selected transmission frequency is subsequently received by the receiver during the operational procedure. 7. The portable device of claim 6 wherein said display indicates the selected transmission frequency. 8. The portable device of claim 1 wherein said receiver is configured to receive the transmitter signal as a locating signal during the operational procedure for tracking an inground position of the transmitter. 9. The portable device of claim 1 wherein said receiver includes an antenna array that is configured for detecting the electromagnetic noise along three orthogonally opposed receiving axes. 10. The portable device of claim 9 wherein said antenna array is configured to receive said transmitter signal as a dipole field during said operational procedure for tracking a position of the transmitter. 11. The portable device of claim 1 wherein said receiver establishes an amount of electromagnetic noise from the measured electromagnetic noise for one or more of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies. 12. The portable device of claim 11 wherein said display displays the amount of electromagnetic noise that is associated with the one or more multiple, predetermined discrete frequencies as at least one of said indications. 13. The portable device of claim 12 including a user input arrangement for receiving one or more user interactions to identify one or more of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies for which the electromagnetic noise is displayed as at least part of the indications. 14. The portable device of claim 13 configured to limit the display indications to the one or more multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies without displaying the amount of noise associated with any discrete transmission frequencies not chosen in the user interactions. 15. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the display is further configured to present the updated indications for the multiple predetermined frequencies at the same time. 16. The portable device of claim 15 wherein the updated indications present an amount of electromagnetic noise for each of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies. 17. The portable device of claim 15 wherein said receiver determines a predicted maximum usable operational depth for each of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies and the updated indications present the predicted maximum usable operational depth for each of the multiple predetermined, discrete frequencies.
