Provided is a composition for preventing or improving impaired renal function, containing Bifidobacterium breve as an active ingredient. The composition for preventing or improving impaired renal function is capable of reducing blood creatinine levels. The composition for preventing or improving impaired renal function can also be used in a pharmaceutical composition or a food or beverage product composition.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of improving renal function in a subject having impaired renal function, the method comprising administering Bifidobacterium breve to the subject in an amount sufficient to reduce blood creatinine levels. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the Bifidobacterium breve is Bifidobacterium breve MCC1274 (FERM BP-11175). 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method also results in improved glomerular function. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Bifidobacterium breve is formulated into a pharmaceutical composition. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Bifidobacterium breve is formulated into a food or beverage product. 6. A method of reducing blood creatinine levels in a subject having impaired renal function, the method comprising administering Bifidobacterium breve to the subject in an amount sufficient to reduce blood creatinine levels. 7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the Bifidobacterium breve is Bifidobacterium breve MCC1274 (FERM BP-11175). 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the method also results in improved glomerular function. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the Bifidobacterium breve is formulated into a pharmaceutical composition. 10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the Bifidobacterium breve is formulated into a food or beverage product.
