Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods, apparatuses, systems, and software are described for providing content to a device comprising streaming content and sending content in a non-streaming manner (e.g., by downloading a file containing the content). In some aspects, switching between streaming and downloading may be performed in a dynamic manner during presentation of the content, and may be seamless to the user's viewing experience.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving, by a first computing device and via streaming from at least one second computing device, first data representing at least a first portion of content, wherein the content comprises the first portion and a second portion; receiving, at least partially during a same timeframe as the streaming and via the at least one second computing device, second data representing at least the second portion of the content, determining that a threshold amount of the second data has been received, wherein the threshold amount corresponds to the first portion and the second portion; and stopping, based on determining that the threshold amount of the second data has been received, the streaming. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: outputting, for display, the at least the second portion of the content. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving the first data comprises receiving the first data via a communications link and the receiving the second data comprises receiving the second data via the communications link, the method further comprising: determining a usage of the communications link; and initiating, based on the determined usage, the receiving of the second data. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stopping the streaming comprises: stopping, during the receiving of the second data, the streaming; and continuing the receiving the at least the second portion of the content after stopping the streaming. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the content includes at least some of the first portion of the content. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data and the second data correspond to the content at a same level of video quality. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: requesting, from the at least one second computing device, the content. 8. A first computing device comprising: one or more processors; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the first computing device to: receive, via streaming from at least one second computing device, first data representing at least a first portion of content, wherein the content comprises the first portion and a second portion; receive, at least partially during a same timeframe as the streaming and via the at least one second computing device, second data representing at least the second portion of the content; determine that a threshold amount of the second data has been received, wherein the threshold amount corresponds to the first portion and the second portion; and stop, based on determining that the threshold amount of the second data has been received, the streaming. 9. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the first computing device to: output, for display, the at least the second portion of the content. 10. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the first computing device to receive the first data by receiving the first data via a communications link and to receive the second data by receiving the second data via the communications link, and wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the first computing device to: determine a usage of the communications link; and initiate, based on the determined usage, the receiving of the second data. 11. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the first computing device to stop the streaming by: stopping, during the receiving of the second data, the streaming; and continuing the receiving the at least the second portion of the content after stopping the streaming. 12. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the second portion of the content includes at least some of the first portion of the content. 13. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the first data and the second data correspond to the content at a same level of video quality. 14. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the first computing device to: request, from the at least one second computing device, the content. 15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause: receiving, by a first computing device and via streaming from at least one second computing device, first data representing at least a first portion of content, wherein the content comprises the first portion and a second portion; receiving, at least partially during a same timeframe as the streaming and via the at least one second computing device, second data representing at least the second portion of the content; determining that a threshold amount of the second data has been received, wherein the threshold amount corresponds to the first portion and the second portion; and stopping, based on determining that the threshold amount of the second data has been received, the streaming. 16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause: outputting, for display, the at least the second portion of the content. 17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the receiving the first data by causing receiving the first data via a communications link and cause the receiving the second data by causing receiving the second data via the communications link, and wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause: determining a usage of the communication link; and initiating, based on the determined usage, the receiving of the second data. 18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the stopping the streaming by causing: stopping, during the receiving of the second data, the streaming; and continuing the receiving the at least the second portion of the content after stopping the streaming. 19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the second portion of the content includes at least some of the first portion of the content. 20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause: requesting, from the at least one second computing device, the content.
