Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus and method for transmitting an indicator of channel quality while minimizing the use of a broadcast channel is described. A metric of forward link geometry of observed transmission signals is determined. An indicator of channel quality value is determined as a function of the observed transmission signals. An access sequence is selected, randomly, from one group of a plurality of groups of access sequences, wherein each of the plurality of groups of access sequences correspond to different ranges of channel quality values.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of wireless communication by an access terminal, the method comprising: receiving system information comprising an indication of a threshold associated with data transmission; selecting an access sequence group from a plurality of access sequence groups based at least in part on comparing a metric of a data transmission to the indicated threshold; selecting an access sequence from a plurality of access sequences in the selected access sequence group; transmitting the selected access sequence; receiving, based at least in part on transmitting the selected access sequence, an access grant message defining one or more resource assignments to be used by one or more access terminals, wherein the access grant message is sent to the one or more access terminals; determining a resource assignment allocated to the access terminal from the one or more resource assignments for the one or more access terminals; and sending data according to the resource assignment allocated to the access terminal in the access grant message. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the access grant message is received on a shared signaling channel. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with a Frequency Division Multiplex (FDM) scheme. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with a Code Division Multiplex (CDM) scheme. 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) scheme. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending data according to the resource assignment comprises sending at least a payload. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein respective quantities of access sequences in each access sequence group of the plurality of access sequence groups are distributed non-uniformly. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining an estimate of channel quality based at least in part on a metric of an observed transmission, wherein the system information comprises an indication of a channel quality threshold associated with data transmission, and wherein selecting the access sequence group from the plurality of access sequence groups is based at least in part on comparing the determined estimate of channel quality to the indicated channel quality threshold. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold associated with data transmission comprises an amount of data to send. 10. An apparatus for wireless communication, the apparatus comprising: means for receiving system information comprising an indication of a threshold associated with data transmission; means for selecting an access sequence group from a plurality of access sequence groups based at least in part on comparing a metric of a data transmission to the indicated threshold; means for selecting an access sequence from a plurality of access sequences in the selected access sequence group; means for transmitting the selected access sequence; means for receiving, based at least in part on transmitting the selected access sequence, an access grant message defining one or more resource assignments to be used by one or more access terminal, wherein the access grant message is sent to the one or more access terminals; means for determining a resource assignment allocated to the access terminal from the one or more resource assignments for the one or more access terminals; and means for sending data according to the resource assignment allocated to the access terminal in the access grant message. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the access grant message is received on a shared signaling channel. 12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the means for sending data according to the resource assignment comprises means for sending at least a payload. 13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the one or more access terminals have CQI values within a defined range of CQI values. 14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein respective quantities of access sequences in each access sequence group of the plurality of access sequence groups are distributed non-uniformly. 15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with a Frequency Division Multiplex (FDM) scheme. 16. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with a Code Division Multiplex (CDM) scheme. 17. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) scheme. 18. An apparatus for wireless communication, the apparatus comprising: a receiver configured to receive system information comprising an indication of a threshold associated with data transmission; a selector configured to select an access sequence group from a plurality of access sequence groups based at least in part on comparing a metric of a data transmission to the indicated threshold; a selector configured to select an access sequence from a plurality of access sequences in the selected access sequence group; a transmitter configured to transmit the selected access sequence; a receiver configured to receive, based at least in part on transmitting the selected access sequence, an access grant message defining one or more resource assignments to be used by one or more access terminals, wherein the access grant message is sent to the one or more access terminals; a processor configured to determine a resource assignment allocated to the access terminal from the one or more resource assignments for the one or more access terminals; and a transmitter configured to send data according to the resource assignment allocated to the access terminal in the access grant message. 19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the access grant message is received on a shared signaling channel. 20. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the one or more access terminals have CQI values within a defined range of CQI values. 21. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein respective quantities of access sequences in each access sequence group of the plurality of access sequence groups are distributed non-uniformly. 22.
