Methods for making acrylic acid, acrylic acid derivatives, or mixtures thereof by contacting a feed stream containing lactic acid, lactic acid derivatives, or mixtures thereof with a molten salt catalyst comprising an ionic liquid (IL) and an acid in liquid phase are provided.
Opening claim text (preview).
What is claimed is: 1. A method of making acrylic acid comprising contacting a feed stream comprising lactide with a molten salt catalyst in a reactor at about 190° C.; wherein said molten salt catalyst comprises [PBu 4 ]Br and 2-BrPA; wherein the molar ratio of lactic acid equivalent to [PBu 4 ]Br to 2-BrPA is about 1:2:0.1; whereby acrylic acid is produced as a result of said contacting in said reactor and is removed in-situ via a reactive distillation at about 10 mbar; and wherein said acrylic acid is produced at a yield of at least about 50%.
