We claim: 1. An apparatus for applying at least one elastic strand to a running web and comprising: an assembly having a crank and an arm, the arm arranged to reciprocate from side to side during use; a laydown carriage carried on the arm and configured to reciprocate along a reciprocation axis in response to reciprocation of the arm, the laydown carriage including at least one eyelet, the at least one eyelet arranged to support the at least one elastic strand; and a shoe guide assembly arranged for sliding engagement with the at least one elastic strand; wherein the laydown carriage is configured to reciprocate independently of the shoe guide assembly. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the shoe guide assembly comprises a first shoe guide member comprising at least one strand guide configured to slidingly engage the at least one elastic strand. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the laydown carriage is configured to cause the at least one elastic strand to engage the at least one strand guide in a first reciprocating position and to cause the at least one elastic strand to disengage from the at least one strand guide in a second reciprocating position. 4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the shoe guide assembly further comprises a second shoe guide member comprising at least one strand guide, the second shoe guide member positioned opposite the first shoe guide member along the reciprocation axis. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the laydown carriage is configured to cause the at least one elastic strand to engage the at least one strand guide of the first shoe guide member in a first reciprocating position and to cause the at least one elastic strand to engage the at least one strand guide of the second shoe guide member in a second reciprocating position. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one elastic strand comprises a plurality of elastic strands; and wherein the at least one eyelet comprises a plurality of eyelets, each eyelet of the plurality of eyelets arranged to support a respective elastic strand of the plurality of elastic strands. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the eyelets of the plurality of eyelets are evenly spaced in the reciprocation axis. 8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the eyelets of the plurality of eyelets are unevenly spaced in the reciprocation axis. 9. A strand laydown assembly comprising: a laydown carriage comprising a strand navigation member configured to guide a strand; an arm rotatably coupled to the laydown carriage; a crank rotatably coupled to the arm and configured, upon rotation about a rotation axis, to cause the arm to drive the laydown carriage in a reciprocating motion along a reciprocation axis; and a shoe guide assembly configured to influence a position of the strand along the reciprocation axis; wherein the laydown carriage is configured to reciprocate independently of the shoe guide assembly. 10. The strand laydown assembly of claim 9 , wherein the strand navigation member is upstream of the shoe guide assembly in a machine direction orthogonal to the reciprocation axis. 11. The strand laydown assembly of claim 10 , wherein the position of the strand navigation member follows a sinusoidal pattern along the machine direction upon the rotation of the crank about the rotation axis. 12. The strand laydown assembly of claim 11 , wherein the shoe guide assembly prevents displacement of the strand beyond a fixed reciprocation position in response to movement of the strand navigation member beyond the fixed reciprocation position. 13. The strand laydown assembly of claim 9 , wherein the shoe guide assembly comprises a pair of shoe guide members spaced apart from each other along the reciprocation axis, each shoe guide member comprising a plurality of strand guides configured to slidingly engage a respective strand. 14. The strand laydown assembly of claim 9 , wherein the strand navigation member comprises an eyelet. 15. A strand laydown assembly comprising: a shoe guide assembly comprising a first shoe guide and a second shoe guide; a laydown carriage configured to move, independently of the shoe guide assembly, in a reciprocating motion along a reciprocation axis, the laydown carriage comprising a strand navigation member configured to guide a strand; an arm rotatably coupled to the laydown carriage; a crank rotatably coupled to the arm and configured, upon rotation about a rotation axis, to cause the arm to drive the laydown carriage in the reciprocating motion along the reciprocation axis; and wherein the first shoe guide is spaced apart from the second shoe guide by a first shoe guide distance in a reciprocation direction parallel with the reciprocation axis. 16. The strand laydown assembly of claim 15 , wherein the crank is further configured to cause the arm to drive the laydown carriage a reciprocation distance between a first reciprocation end location and a second reciprocation end location opposite the first reciprocation end location. 17. The strand laydown assembly of claim 16 , wherein the reciprocation distance is larger than the first shoe guide distance. 18. The strand laydown assembly of claim 15 , wherein the crank is further configured to cause the arm to drive the laydown carriage a reciprocation distance between a first reciprocation end location and a second reciprocation end location opposite the first reciprocation end location; and wherein the first reciprocation end location is aligned with the first shoe guide distance separating the first shoe guide from the second shoe guide in a machine direction orthogonal to the reciprocation axis; and wherein the second reciprocation end location is misaligned with the first shoe guide distance separating the first shoe guide from the second shoe guide in the machine direction. 19. The strand laydown assembly of claim 15 , wherein the shoe guide assembly further comprises a third shoe guide and a fourth shoe guide spaced apart from the third shoe guide by a second shoe guide distance in the reciprocation direction parallel with the reciprocation axis. 20. The strand laydown assembly of claim 15 , wherein the second shoe guide distance is larger than the first shoe guide distance.
