Official abstract text for this publication.
A suture anchor method including a suture anchor and a suture anchor drive. The suture anchor is positionable on a rod of the suture anchor drive. The rod defines an awl for forming a hole in a bone. The suture anchor drive further has an impactor for moving the suture anchor along the rod between a retracted position and an advanced position so as to implant the suture anchor in the bone with the awl positioned in the bone.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for anchoring a soft tissue to a bone, comprising: supporting a suture anchor on a rod, the rod having a leading end and a trailing end, the leading end defining an awl with at least one point for forming a hole in the bone, the suture anchor comprising a body member having a leading end, a trailing end, a cannula extending through the body member from the leading end of the body member to the trailing end of the body member, and at least one bone engaging member; loading at least one suture into the suture anchor; selecting an anchoring location on the bone; piercing the anchoring location on the bone with the awl of the rod; driving the at least one suture into the bone; driving the suture anchor axially along the rod and into the bone; and removing the rod from the bone thereby leaving the suture anchor and the at least one suture in the bone, wherein the rod has a cannula extending from the leading end of the rod toward the trailing end of the rod, and wherein the step of loading the at least one suture into the suture anchor comprises: passing at least one capture suture through the cannula of the rod such that a loop of suture is exposed at the leading end of the rod; and feeding the at least one suture through the loop of suture at the leading end of the rod; and tightening the loop of suture. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the leading end of the suture anchor has a pair of diametrically opposed suture receiving notches formed therein, and wherein the step of loading the at least one suture into the suture anchor comprises positioning the at least one suture in the suture receiving notches of the suture anchor whereby the at least one suture is carried into the bone by the suture anchor. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the body member of the suture anchor has a longitudinal axis, wherein the suture receiving notches are substantially V-shaped with one side of the suture receiving notches being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, and wherein the step of driving the suture anchor further comprises: positioning the suture anchor on the rod so the at least one point of the awl is longitudinally aligned with with the side of the suture receiving notch that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member. 4. A method for anchoring a soft tissue to a bone, comprising: supporting a suture anchor on a rod, the rod having a leading end and a trailing end, the leading end defining an awl with at least one point for forming a hole in the bone, the suture anchor comprising a body member having a leading end, a trailing end, a longitudinal axis, a cannula extending through the body member from the leading end of the body member to the trailing end of the body member, and at least one bone engaging member, the leading end of the body member having a pair of diametrically opposed suture receiving notches formed therein; loading at least one suture into the suture anchor, wherein the step of loading the at least one suture into the suture anchor comprises positioning the at least one suture in the suture receiving notches of the suture anchor whereby the at least one suture is carried into the bone by the suture anchor; selecting an anchoring location on the bone; piercing the anchoring location on the bone with the awl of the rod; driving the at least one suture into the bone; driving the suture anchor axially along the rod and into the bone, wherein the step of driving the suture anchor comprises sliding an impactor sleeve disposed about the rod axially along the rod such that the impactor sleeve is movable axially along the rod from a retracted position wherein a front end of the impactor sleeve is spaced a distance from the leading end of the rod so as to define an anchor holding area on the rod between the leading end of the rod and the front end of the impactor sleeve and an advanced position wherein the impactor sleeve is moved toward the leading end of the rod; and removing the rod from the bone thereby leaving the suture anchor and the at least one suture in the bone. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the impactor sleeve has an implant alignment protrusion extending in a longitudinal direction into the anchor holding area when the impactor sleeve is in the retracted position, wherein the trailing end of the body member has at least one implant alignment notch formed therein, and wherein the step of driving the suture anchor further comprises: positioning the suture anchor on the anchor holding area of the rod with the rod disposed through the cannula of the body member with the awl extending past the leading end of the suture anchor and the at least one implant alignment notch of the trailing end of the body member engaged with the implant alignment protrusion of the impactor sleeve. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the suture receiving notches are substantially V-shaped with one side of the suture receiving notches being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, and wherein the step of driving the suture anchor further comprises: positioning the suture anchor on the anchor holding area of the rod so the at least one implant alignment notch is longitudinally aligned with at least a portion of one of the suture receiving notches. 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the at least one implant alignment notch is longitudinally aligned with the side of the suture receiving notch that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member.
