Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure extends to methods, systems, apparatus, and computer program products related to a cable-based measuring system. The cable-based measuring system includes a cable, comprising an inner cable member configured to move linearly within an outer cable housing. The measuring system also includes a measuring device configured to generate measurement information regarding movement of the inner cable member relative to the outer cable housing using one or more encoders. A computer system receives the measurement information from the measuring device. The measurement information indicates length as a function of time, and represents three orthogonal dimensional measurements of a three-dimensional object. Based on the measurement information, the computer system identifies a length of each dimensional measurement, including a length, a width, and a height of the three-dimensional object. The computer system then initiates creation of a box template sized to accommodate the three-dimensional object and/or updates a database.

What is claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: a cable, the cable comprising an inner cable member positioned within an outer cable housing, the inner cable member configured to move linearly relative to the outer cable housing, the outer cable housing comprising a first end and an opposing second end, and the inner cable member comprising a first end and a second end; and a measuring device, comprising: a control housing; one or more encoders disposed within the control housing, the one or more encoders configured to detect movement of the inner cable member relative to the outer cable housing and to generate measurement information relating to movement of the inner cable member relative to the outer cable housing; and a communications mechanism disposed within or connected to the control housing, the communications mechanism configured to communicate the measurement information to a computer system to initiate creation of a box template based on the measurement information, wherein: the first end of the outer cable housing is connected to the control housing such that the outer cable housing extends away from an outer surface of the control housing; and the inner cable member extending through the outer cable housing such that (i) the first end of the inner cable member extends out of the first end of the outer cable housing and into the control housing and (ii) the second end of the inner cable member extends out of the second end of the outer cable housing. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more encoders generate measurement information as a plurality of pulses or as angular rotational information. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first end of the outer cable housing is connected to the measuring device in a stationary manner. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the inner cable member is configured to move through the outer cable housing and relative to the one or more encoders. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more encoders comprise at least one mechanical encoder or at least one optical encoder. 6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising: a computing device, the computing device being configured to convert motion information from the one or more encoders into measurement information. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the measuring device is configured to interface with the inner cable member, the inner cable member having a return mechanism on one end. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the communications mechanism is configured to communicate bi-directionally with the computer system. 9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising: one or more output devices, the one or more output devices being configured to provide audible and/or visible feedback. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more output devices are configured to indicate one or more of: recognition of a single dimensional measurement and/or recognition of three-dimensional measurements of an object. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more output devices are configured to indicate an error condition related to measuring an object. 12. The system of claim 1 , further comprising: one or more input devices, the one or more input devices being configured to receive user input relating to entry of a dimensional measurement, acknowledgment or correction of an error condition, and/or completion measurement of an object. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computer system is configured to update a database with the measurement information. 14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a computer system in communication with the communication mechanism of the measuring device. 15. The system of claim 14 , further comprising a material processing machine in communication with the computer system, the material processing machine being configured to create box templates based on the measurement information. 16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inner cable member and the outer cable housing are substantially rigid along a linear direction of the cable. 17. A cable-based measuring system, comprising: a cable, the cable comprising an inner cable member positioned within an outer cable housing, the inner cable member configured to move linearly relative to the outer cable housing, the outer cable housing comprising a first end and an opposing second end, and the inner cable member comprising a first end and a second end; a measuring device, the measuring device configured to generate measurement information regarding movement of the inner cable member relative to the outer cable housing the first end of the outer cable housing being connected to the measuring device and extending from an outer surface thereof, and the inner cable member extending through the outer cable housing such that (i) the first end of the inner cable member extends out of the first end of the outer cable housing and into the control housing and (ii) the second end of the inner cable member extends out of the second end of the outer cable housing outside of the measuring device; and a computer system, the computer system configured to: receive the measurement information from the measuring device and initiate creation of a box template based on the measurement information; or update an item database, the item database containing dimensional information for one or more physical items. 18. The cable-based measuring system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the measuring device comprises one or more encoders, the one or more encoders configured to detect movement of the inner cable member relative to the outer cable housing and to generate measurement information relating to movement of the inner cable member relative to the outer cable housing. 19. The cable-based measuring system as recited in claim 18 , wherein the one or more encoders generate measurement information as a plurality of pulses. 20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the inner cable member and the outer cable housing are substantially rigid along a linear direction of the cable.
