Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Pinch clamps are provided which generate positive displacement while also preventing rebound. To prevent rebound while providing positive displacement, the upper and lower clamping surfaces may be configured to form a pinch profile along which the tubing is compressed with the pinch point being formed at the distal end of the pinch profile. To further prevent rebound, the lower arm of the pinch clamp can include blocking ribs that interface with the upper clamping surface to prevent distal travelling of the pinch point even if the upper arm is forced into an over-engaged position.

We claim: 1. A pinch clamp comprising: an upper arm comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and an upper clamping surface, wherein the upper clamping surface comprises a protruding distal portion and a generally flat proximal portion; a hinge; a lower arm comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the lower arm is coupled to the proximal end of the upper arm via the hinge, wherein the lower arm further comprises: a flat lower clamping surface, comprising a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the flat lower clamping surface is flat between the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface and the proximal end of the flat lower clamping surface, wherein a proximal end of the upper clamping surface is aligned with the proximal end of the flat lower clamping surface; a first blocking rib; and a second blocking rib, wherein the first blocking rib and the second blocking rib extend distally from the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface along opposing sides of the lower arm and are spaced apart by a gap; and a terminal end that extends upwardly from the distal end of the lower arm, the terminal end including an engaging structure that forms an engaging surface that interfaces with the distal end of the upper arm to retain the pinch clamp in an engaged position. 2. The pinch clamp of claim 1 , wherein the upper clamping surface is angled downward in a distal direction relative to the flat lower clamping surface when the pinch clamp is in the engaged position. 3. A pinch clamp comprising: an upper arm comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and an upper clamping surface, wherein the upper clamping surface comprises a protruding distal portion and a generally flat proximal portion; a hinge; a lower arm comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the lower arm is coupled to the proximal end of the upper arm via the hinge, wherein the lower arm further comprises: a flat lower clamping surface, comprising a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the flat lower clamping surface is flat between the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface and the proximal end of the flat lower clamping surface; a first blocking rib; and a second blocking rib, wherein the first blocking rib and the second blocking rib extend distally from the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface along opposing sides of the lower arm and are spaced apart by a gap; a terminal end that extends upwardly from the distal end of the lower arm, the terminal end including an engaging structure that forms an engaging surface that interfaces with the distal end of the upper arm to retain the pinch clamp in an engaged position; and a rib distal to the upper clamping surface and extending downwardly from an underside of the upper arm, wherein the rib is configured to insert into the gap when the pinch clamp is in the engaged position, wherein the protruding distal portion and the generally flat proximal portion extend downwardly beyond the rib. 4. The pinch clamp of claim 3 , wherein the upper clamping surface is angled downward in a distal direction relative to the flat lower clamping surface when the pinch clamp is in the engaged position. 5. A pinch clamp comprising: an upper arm comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and an upper clamping surface, wherein the upper clamping surface comprises a protruding distal portion and a generally flat proximal portion; a hinge; a lower arm comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the lower arm is coupled to the proximal end of the upper arm via the hinge, wherein the lower arm further comprises: a flat lower clamping surface, comprising a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the flat lower clamping surface is flat between the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface and the proximal end of the flat lower clamping surface, wherein the protruding distal portion is disposed proximal to the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface; a first blocking rib; and a second blocking rib, wherein the first blocking rib and the second blocking rib extend distally from the distal end of the flat lower clamping surface along opposing sides of the lower arm and are spaced apart by a gap; and a terminal end that extends upwardly from the distal end of the lower arm, the terminal end including an engaging structure that forms an engaging surface that interfaces with the distal end of the upper arm to retain the pinch clamp in an engaged position; wherein, when the pinch clamp is in the engaged position, a distance between the protruding distal portion of the upper clamping surface and the flat lower clamping surface is less than a distance between the generally flat proximal portion of the upper clamping surface and the flat lower clamping surface. 6. The pinch clamp of claim 5 , wherein the protruding distal portion of the upper clamping surface protrudes downwardly from the generally flat proximal portion of the upper clamping surface. 7. The pinch clamp of claim 5 , further comprising: blocking ribs that are positioned on opposing sides of the lower arm and that extend distally from the distal portion of the flat lower clamping surface. 8. The pinch clamp of claim 5 , further comprising: a rib distal to the upper clamping surface and extending downwardly from an underside of the upper arm, wherein the rib is configured to insert into the gap when the pinch clamp is in the engaged position, wherein the protruding distal portion and the generally flat proximal portion extend downwardly beyond the rib. 9. The pinch clamp of claim 5 , wherein edges of the upper and lower arms are rounded.
