Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A baler including a frame, and a compression system coupled to the frame, where the compression system at least partially defines a compression chamber. The baler also includes a feed pan at least partially defining a pre-compression chamber in operable communication with the compression chamber, where the feed pan includes an inlet defining an inlet area and an outlet defining an outlet area, and where the outlet of the pre-compression chamber is open to the compression chamber of the compression system. The baler also includes at least one actuator coupled to the feed pan, and a controller in operable communication with the at least one actuator, and where the controller is configured to adjust the inlet area and the outlet area independently.

The baler of claim 1 , further comprising a lifting fork at least partially positioned within and movable with respect to the pre-compression chamber, and wherein the controller adjusts the inlet area and the outlet area independent of movement of the lifting fork. 3. The baler of claim 1 , wherein the compression assembly includes a plunger at least partially positioned within and movable with respect to the compression chamber, and wherein the controller adjusts the inlet area and the outlet area independent of movement of the plunger. 4. The baler of claim 1 , wherein the feed pan includes a first wall and a second wall spaced a distance from and movable relative to the first wall, and wherein moving the second wall relative to the first wall causes at least one of the inlet area and the outlet area to change. 5. The baler of claim 4 , wherein the first wall includes a first edge and a second edge opposite the first edge, and wherein the second wall includes a third edge and a fourth edge opposite the third edge. 6. The baler of claim 5 , wherein the outlet is at least partially defined by the second edge of the first wall and the fourth edge of the second wall. 7. The baler of claim 6 , wherein inlet is at least partially defined by the first edge of the first wall and the third edge of the second wall. 8. The baler of claim 1 , wherein the at least one actuator includes a first set of one or more actuators in operable communication with the feed pan and configured to adjust the outlet area. 9. The baler of claim 8 , further comprising a second set of one or more actuators in operable communication with the feed pan and configured to adjust the inlet area. 10. The baler of claim 1 , further including one or more sensors configured to output signals indicating the operating parameters of the baler, and wherein the controller is configured to adjust one of the inlet area and the outlet area based at least in part on the output signals of the one or more sensors. 11. A baler for use with a forming bale, the baler comprising: a frame; a compression system coupled to the frame, the compression system including a compression chamber sized to receive at least a portion of the forming bale therein, and a plunger at least partially positioned within and movable with respect to the compression chamber; a feed pan at least partially defining a pre-compression chamber in operable communication with the compression chamber, wherein the shape of the pre-compression chamber is adjustable, and wherein the pre-compression chamber is open to the compression chamber; a controller in operable communication with the compression system, and wherein the controller is configured to calculate the density of crop material at two or more different locations within the bale; a first sensor configured to output signals to the controller indicating an orientation of the plunger with respect to the compression chamber; and a second sensor configured to output signals to the controller indicating the compressive force exerted by the plunger, wherein the controller calculates the density of crop material within the forming bale at two or more different locations based at least in part on the signals output by the first sensor and the second sensor, wherein the controller is configured to compile data of the density of the crop material at the two or more different locations to produce a vertical profile of the forming bale, wherein the controller is configured to receive, via a user interface, an operator input indicating a predetermined vertical profile of the forming bale, and wherein the controller is configured to adjust the shape of the pre-compression chamber based at least in part on a comparison between the predetermined vertical profile and the vertical profile of the forming bale. 12. The baler of claim 11 , wherein the feed pan includes an inlet defining an inlet area and an outlet defining an outlet area, and wherein the controller is configured to adjust one of the inlet area and the outlet area to adjust the shape of the pre-compression chamber. 13. A method of baling with a baler having a compression system defining a compression chamber sized to receive a forming bale therein and a pre-compression chamber open to the compression chamber with an adjustable shape, the method comprising: calculating a first density data point indicating a density of crop material at a first location within the forming bale; calculating a second density data point indicating a density of crop material at a second location within the forming bale different than the first location; compiling the first density data point and the second density data point to produce a vertical profile; based at least in part on the vertical profile, adjusting the shape of the pre-compression chamber at at least one of two adjustable positions on a wall forming at least in part the pre-compression chamber; and wherein the compression system includes a plunger positioned within and movable with respect to the compression chamber, and wherein the first density data point is calculated based at least in part on an orientation of the plunger with respect to the compression chamber. 14.
