The present invention relates to the synthesis of intermediate compounds which can be used in the synthesis of mint lactone and related compounds, including 3,6-dimethylhexahydrobenzofuran-2-ones, isomers, and other derivatives.

The invention claimed is: 1. A compound chosen from formulas (XI), (XII) and (XIII) below: wherein X is chlorine. 2. A compound according to claim 1 , wherein the compound is a compound of general formula (XIII): wherein X is chlorine. 3. The organoleptic compound according to claim 1 , which is a compound of formula XI. 4. The organoleptic compound according to claim 1 , which is a compound of formula XII. 5. An organoleptic composition, comprising a compound according to formula (XI) or (XII), or a mixture thereof: 6. The organoleptic composition according to claim 5 , wherein the composition is a fragrance formulation. 7. The organoleptic composition according to claim 5 , wherein the composition is a flavoring formulation.
