Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicle structure includes a vehicle frame with a first side member, a front suspension structure and a stop structure. The stop structure is installed to a first side member rearward of the front suspension structure. The stop structure extends outboard from the first side member and includes an upper surface, a lower surface and a main surface. The upper surface and the lower surface are horizontally oriented. The main surface is vertically oriented and includes a first section, a second section and a third section. The first section is attached to the first side member. The second section extends outboard from the first section defining a forward-facing stop surface that extends to a distal outboard end of the stop structure. The third section extends rearward from the second section, with the first section, the second section and the third section defining vertically oriented exterior surfaces.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle structure comprising: a vehicle frame having a first side member and a second side member, the first side member and the second side member having respective front ends with each of the first side member and the second side member extending rearward from the front ends in a vehicle longitudinal direction, the vehicle longitudinal direction being defined relative to a lengthwise direction of the vehicle frame, the first side member further including a cabin attachment flange that extends in an outboard direction from an outboard side surface of the first side member; a front suspension structure coupled to the first side member rearward of the front end of the first side member; and a stop structure attached to the first side member at a location rearward of the front suspension structure, the stop structure extending in an outboard direction from the first side member, the stop structure including an upper surface, a lower surface and a main surface, the upper surface and the lower surface being spaced apart from one another defining a hollow interior, the stop structure having a forward end, an outboard end and a rearward end that are covered concealing the hollow interior, the main surface being between the upper and lower surfaces, the main surface having a first section, a second section and a third section, the first section being attached to the first side member, the second section extending outboard from the first section defining a forward-facing stop surface that extends to a distal outboard end of the stop structure, and the third section extending rearward from the second section, with the first section, the second section and the third section defining vertically oriented exterior surfaces, the stop structure being attached to the cabin attachment flange at a location spaced apart from the first section of the main surface. 2. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the stop structure is attached to the side surface of the first side member and to the cabin attachment flange. 3. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the stop structure further includes a mid-plate located between the upper surface and the lower surface, and, the mid-plate being spaced apart from the upper surface and the lower surface, with the main surface extending at least partially around the mid-plate. 4. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the third section of the main surface of the stop structure is rigidly attached to the cabin attachment flange. 5. The vehicle structure according to claim 4 , wherein the first section of the main surface of the stop structure is welded to a side surface of the first side member and the third section of the main surface of the stop structure is welded to the cabin attachment flange. 6. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , further comprising a first cross-member extending in a vehicle lateral direction from the first side member to the second side member at a location rearward of the front ends, the first cross-member being rigidly fixed to each the first side member and the second side member, with a front portion of the front suspension structure being located adjacent to and forward of an intersection of the first cross-member and the first side member. 7. The vehicle structure according to claim 6 , further comprising a second cross-member that extends in a vehicle lateral direction from the first side member to the second side member at a location rearward of the first cross-member, the second cross-member being rigidly fixed to each the first side member and the second side member. 8. The vehicle structure according to claim 7 , wherein the front portion of the front suspension structure is located adjacent to an intersection of the first cross-member and the first side member, and the rear portion of the front suspension structure is located adjacent to an intersection of the second cross-member and the first side member. 9. The vehicle structure according to claim 8 , further comprising an off-center impact reinforcement structure including a push arm coupled to the vehicle frame proximate the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member and extending in a forward and laterally outboard direction from the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member and forward of the front wheel. 10. The vehicle structure according to claim 9 , wherein the off-center impact reinforcement structure further includes a first diagonal structure extending rearward and laterally inboard from proximate the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member. 11. The vehicle structure according to claim 10 , wherein the first diagonal structure extends from proximate the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member to a mid-portion of the second cross-member. 12. The vehicle structure according to claim 10 , wherein the off-center impact reinforcement structure further includes a second diagonal structure extending rearward from the mid-portion of the second cross-member to the second side member. 13. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the stop surface defines an angle relative to the vehicle longitudinal direction that is between 110 and 130 degrees. 14. A vehicle structure comprising: a vehicle frame having a first side member and a second side member, the first side member and the second side member having respective front ends with each of the first side member and the second side member extending rearward from the front ends in a vehicle longitudinal direction, the vehicle longitudinal direction being defined relative to a lengthwise direction of the vehicle frame, the first side member further includes a cabin attachment flange that extends in an outboard direction from an outboard side surface of the first side member; a front suspension structure coupled to the first side member rearward of the front end of the first side member; and a stop structure attached to the first side member at a location rearward of the front suspension structure, the stop structure extending in an outboard direction from the first side member, the stop structure further including a vertically oriented main surface that has a first section, a second section and a third section, the first section being directly attached to the first side member, the second section extending from the first section to the third section, the second section defining a forward-facing stop surface that extends to a distal outboard end of the stop structure, and the third section defining an outboard surface of the stop structure that extends from the second section rearward, with a rearward side of the stop structure being rigidly attached to the cabin attachment flange, the stop structure further including a mid-plate located between the upper surface and the lower surface, and, the mid-plate being spaced apart from the upper surface and the lower surface, with the main surface at least partially enclosing the mid-plate. 15.
