Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A mold for forming a wind turbine blade comprising first and second mold surfaces including a flange portion having an opening therein, wherein the first and second mold surfaces are configured for relative movement therebetween from an open position to a closed position. The opening of the first flange portion is aligned with the opening of the second flange portion when in the closed position, and a first magnet is disposed within the opening in the opening of the first mold surface, and a second magnet is disposed within the opening of the second mold surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A mold for forming a wind turbine blade having a leading edge and a trailing edge comprising: a first mold surface, the first mold surface including a first flange portion having an opening therein; a second mold surface, the second mold surface including a second flange portion having an opening formed therein: wherein the first and second mold surfaces are configured for relative movement therebetween from an open position to a closed position; a removable flange having a laterally extending portion and an upwardly extending portion defining an angle therebetween, the laterally extending portion having an opening formed therein, and disposed adjacent to the first flange portion of the first mold surface, with the laterally extending portion of the removable flange extending a distance less than the first flange portion of the first mold surface, and an apex of the angle between the laterally extending portion and upwardly extending portion disposed at the leading edge, the upwardly extending portion having a first end and a second end, the first end disposed at the leading edge and the second end spaced from the leading edge; wherein the opening of the first flange portion is aligned with the opening of the laterally extending portion of the removable flange; and a first magnet disposed within the opening in the first flange portion; and a second magnet disposed within the opening of the laterally extending portion of the removable flange; and a third magnet disposed within the opening of the second flange portion. 2. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the first and second magnets are rare-earth magnets. 3. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the first magnet has a width greater than at least half the width of the first flange portion. 4. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the second magnet has a width greater than at least half the width of the laterally extending portion of the removable flange. 5. The mold of claim 1 , wherein at least one magnet has a thickness of approximately 3 mm. 6. The mold of claim 1 , wherein a depth of the opening in the first flange portion extends a distance less than the thickness of the first flange portion. 7. The mold of claim 1 , wherein a depth of the opening in the laterally extending portion of the removable flange extends a distance less than the thickness of the laterally extending portion of the removable flange. 8. The mold of claim 1 , wherein an upper surface of the first magnet is in-plane with an upper surface of the first flange portion. 9. The mold of claim 1 , wherein an upper surface of the second magnet is in-plane with an upper surface of the laterally extending portion of the removable flange. 10. The mold of claim 1 , wherein at least one lamina of a composite material is disposed between the first flange portion and the the second flange portion when the mold is in a closed position. 11. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the first flange portion and second flange portion have an equivalent width.
