Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method and a system convert the value of a gift card for use with a mobile device. The value of the gift card is determined from an issuer of the gift card. The value of the gift card is stored in a digital payment account in a storage device. The digital payment account stores values of gift cards from issuers. A financial transaction corresponding to the issuer of the gift card is performed on the digital payment account. The value of a first gift card from a first issuer of a first digital payment account is exchanged with the value of a second gift card from a second issuer of a second digital payment account.

The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising causing display of the image of the gift card on the mobile device. 3. The system of claim 2 , the operations further comprising retrieving an updated value of the gift card after causing the display. 4. The system of claim 3 , the operations further comprising updating the gift card balance in the financial account of the user of the mobile device based on the updated value. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the updating updates the gift card balance in a first digital payment account associated with the mobile device. 6. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising transferring the gift card image to an additional mobile device. 7. The system of claim 6 , the operations further comprising retrieving an additional updated value of the gift card after a second financial transaction initiated by the additional mobile device and updating the gift card balance in the financial account of the user of the mobile device based on the additional updated value. 8. A method comprising: receiving an image of a gift card from a mobile device, the image of the gift card captured via an optical input by the mobile device and comprising a machine-readable symbol; querying the value of the gift card from an issuer of the gift card based on the image of the gift card; and linking the value of the gift card with a financial account of a user of the mobile device. 9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising causing display of the image of the gift card on the mobile device. 10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising retrieving an updated value of the gift card after causing the display. 11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising updating the gift card balance in the financial account of the user of the mobile device based on the updated value. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the updating updates the gift card balance in a first digital payment account associated with the mobile device. 13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising transferring the gift card image to an additional mobile device. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising retrieving an additional updated value of the gift card after a second financial transaction initiated by the additional mobile device and updating the gift card balance in the financial account of the user of the mobile device based on the additional updated value. 15. A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing a set of instructions, the set of instructions executable by one or more computer processors to perform operations comprising: receiving an image of a gift card from a mobile device, the image of the gift card captured via an optical input by the mobile device and comprising a machine-readable symbol; querying the value of the gift card from an issuer of the gift card based on the image of the gift card; and linking the value of the gift card with a financial account of a user of the mobile device. 16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , the operations further comprising causing display of the image of the gift card on the mobile device. 17. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 16 , the operations further comprising retrieving an updated value of the gift card after causing the display. 18. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 17 , the operations further comprising updating the gift card balance in the financial account of the user of the mobile device based on the updated value. 19. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the updating updates the gift card balance in a first digital payment account associated with the mobile device. 20. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , the operations further comprising: transferring the gift card image to an additional mobile device; and retrieving an additional updated value of the gift card after a second financial transaction initiated by the additional mobile device and updating the gift card balance in the financial account of the user of the mobile device based on the additional updated value.
