Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A zero turn vehicle is disclosed, having an operator platform located adjacent to the rear of the frame. An upright riser is disposed on the frame. The vehicle uses first and second electric drive transmissions to drive the output wheels. An electrical bus or controllers may be mounted on a panel of the upright riser to assist in providing a compact design. A pair of drive levers is mounted on the upright riser for controlling the output of the vehicle.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle, comprising: a first driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of a frame and a second driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of the frame; an operator platform disposed on the frame adjacent to a rear end of the frame, configured to permit an operator to stand on the vehicle during operation of the vehicle; an electric power source disposed on the vehicle; a drive control mechanism for controlling speed and direction of the vehicle; at least one traction controller disposed on the vehicle and in communication with the drive control mechanism; at least one electric drive disposed on the vehicle and connected to and controlled by the at least one traction controller, the at least one electric drive connected to and driving at least one of the first driven wheel and the second driven wheel; and an upright riser disposed on the frame and having a rear surface providing a support portion for the operator, and a front surface opposite to the rear surface, wherein the drive control mechanism is disposed on the upright riser and the at least one traction controller is disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion. 2. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers, each of the pair of traction controllers being disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion. 3. The vehicle of claim 2 , further comprising a pair of caster wheel assemblies mounted to the frame adjacent to a front end thereof. 4. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electric drive comprises a first electric transaxle engaged to and driving the first driven wheel and a second electric transaxle engaged to and driving the second driven wheel. 5. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers. 6. The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers, each of the pair of traction controllers being disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion. 7. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the drive control mechanism comprises a pair of drive levers disposed on the upright riser. 8. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electric drive comprises a first electric wheel motor engaged to and driving the first driven wheel and a second electric wheel motor engaged to and driving the second driven wheel. 9. The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers. 10. The vehicle of claim 9 , further comprising a pair of caster wheel assemblies mounted to the frame adjacent to a front end thereof and a pair of electrical actuators, each of the pair of electrical actuators engaged to one of the pair of caster wheel assemblies and to one of the pair of traction controllers. 11. The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers, each of the pair of traction controllers being disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion. 12. The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the drive control mechanism comprises a pair of drive controls. 13. The vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising an electrical bus disposed on the upright riser, wherein at least the pair of traction controllers and the pair of drive controls are connected to the electrical bus. 14. The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the pair of drive controls comprises a pair of drive levers disposed on the upright riser. 15. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electric power source comprises an internal combustion engine connected to at least one electrical generating device. 16. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the at least one electrical generating device comprises an alternator. 17. A vehicle, comprising: a first driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of a frame and a second driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of the frame; an operator platform disposed on the frame adjacent to a rear end of the frame, configured to permit an operator to stand on the vehicle during operation of the vehicle; an electric power source disposed on the vehicle; a pair of drive levers for controlling speed and direction of the vehicle; at least one traction controller disposed on the vehicle and in communication with the pair of drive levers; a pair of electric drives disposed on the vehicle, each of the pair of electric drives being connected to and controlled by the at least one traction controller, each of the pair of electric drives connected to and driving one of the first driven wheel and the second driven wheel; an upright riser disposed on the frame and having a rear surface providing a support portion for the operator, and a front surface opposite to the rear surface, wherein the pair of drive levers are disposed on the upright riser; and a pair of control assemblies disposed on the upright riser, each of the pair of control assemblies comprising a separate potentiometer engaged to one of the pair of drive levers by a separate linkage. 18. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers and the separate potentiometer of each of the pair of control assemblies is wired to one of the pair of traction controllers. 19. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the pair of control assemblies each further comprise a separate return to neutral mechanism disposed on the upright riser. 20. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the pair of electric drives comprises a first electric wheel motor engaged to and driving the first driven wheel and a second electric wheel motor engaged to and driving the second driven wheel. 21. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the pair of electric drives comprises a first electric transaxle engaged to and driving the first driven wheel and a second electric transaxle engaged to and driving the second driven wheel.
