Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building or area. Particular systems and methods for determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building determine an estimate of a position of a receiver, and use the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building. The other data may include locations of geo-fences inside buildings, heights of buildings, or other types of data.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building or area, the method comprising: determining an estimate of a position of a receiver; and using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building based on a first geo-fence of the first building or a height of the first building, wherein using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building comprises: determining if the estimate of the position is closer to the first geo-fence of the first building than a second geo-fence of a second building, and if the estimate of the position is closer to the first geo-fence of the first building than the second geo-fence of the second building, determining that the receiver is inside the first building; determining a first distance between the estimate of the position and the first geo-fence of the first building, determining a second distance between the estimate of the position and a second geo-fence of a second building, determining if the first distance and the second distance are within a predefined amount of distance, and if the first distance and the second distance are within the predefined amount of distance, determining that the receiver is between the first building and the second building; comparing the estimate of the position to the first geo-fence of the first building, determining, based on the comparison, a first relationship between the estimate of the position and the first building, wherein the first relationship specifies whether the estimate of the position is within the first building, outside of the first building, or within an adjacent building, and determining a first confidence level related to the first relationship; determining if the first building is shorter than the estimated altitude, and if the first building is shorter than the estimated altitude, determining that the position of the receiver is not inside the first building; determining if the first building is shorter than an estimated altitude, and if the first building is taller than the estimated altitude, determining that the position of the receiver is inside the first building; determining if the receiver is inside the first building or inside a second building by determining if the first building is shorter than the estimated altitude, determining if the second building is taller than the estimated altitude, and if the first building is shorter than the estimated altitude and if the second building is taller than the estimated altitude, determining that the position of the receiver is inside the second building; or determining if the receiver is inside the first building or inside a second building by determining if the first building is taller than the estimated altitude, determining if the second building is taller than the estimated altitude, if the first building is taller than the estimated altitude and if the second building is taller than the estimated altitude, determining if the estimated altitude is in an inaccessible area of the first building, and if the estimated altitude is in the inaccessible area of the first building, determining that the position of the receiver is inside the second building. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: disabling an application on the receiver based on a comparison of the estimate of the position and position information of the first geo-fence inside a building, wherein the application is disabled to lower power consumption of the receiver or the application is disabled to prevent the receiver from accessing data from inside the building; determining another estimate of another position of the receiver; and enabling the application on the receiver based on a comparison of the other estimate of the other position and position information of a second geo-fence inside the building. 3. A method for determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building or area, the method comprising: determining an estimate of a position of a receiver; and using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building based on a first geo-fence of the first building, wherein using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building comprises: determining a first distance between the estimate of the position and the first geo-fence of the first building; determining a second distance between the estimate of the position and a second geo-fence of a second building; determining if the first distance and the second distance are within a predefined amount of distance; and if the first distance and the second distance are within the predefined amount of distance, determining that the receiver is between the first building and the second building. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the predefined amount of distance is a few meters. 5. A method for determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building or area, the method comprising: determining an estimate of a position of a receiver; and using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building based on a first geo-fence of the first building, wherein using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building comprises: comparing the estimate of the position to the first geo-fence of the first building; determining, based on the comparison of the estimate of the position to the first geo-fence of the first building, a first relationship between the estimate of the position and the first building, wherein the first relationship specifies whether the estimate of the position is within the first building, outside of the first building, or within an adjacent building; and determining a first confidence level related to the first relationship; comparing the estimate of the position to a second geo-fence associated with a second building; determining, based on the comparison of the estimate of the position to a second geo-fence associated with a second building, a second relationship between the estimate of the position and the second building, wherein the second relationship specifies whether the estimate of the position is within the second building, outside of the second building, or within an adjacent building; and determining a second confidence level related to the second relationship. 6. A method for determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building or area, the method comprising: determining an estimate of a position of a receiver, wherein the estimate of the position includes an estimated altitude; and using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building based on a height of the first building, wherein using the estimate of the position of the receiver and other data to determine if the position of the receiver is inside a first building comprises: determining if the first building is shorter or taller than the estimated altitude; and if the first building is shorter than the estimated altitude, determining that the position of the receiver is not inside the first building. 7. A method for determining if a receiver is inside or outside a building or area, the method comprising: determining an estimate of a position of a receiver, wherein the estimate of the position includes an estimated altitude; and using the estimate of the position of the
