Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

This disclosure describes a collection bin for a waste collection vehicle. The collection bin includes a weighing system with a processor for measuring the weight of material collected from each waste container and associating this weight with appropriate data, such as the owner of the waste container.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A collection bin, comprising: an enclosure comprising a front wall and a rear wall connected by opposing side walls, the enclosure removably coupled to a front loading waste collection vehicle configured to dump material disposed in the enclosure into a hopper carried by the vehicle; an automated robotic arm supported by the rear wall of the enclosure, the robotic arm configured to obtain the material from one or more waste containers and dispose the material in the enclosure; and a weighing system configured to weigh the material disposed in the enclosure by the robotic arm to produce weight measurements, wherein the weighing system is self-contained on the enclosure, wherein the enclosure comprises a coupling configured to secure the enclosure to a lift comprising arms extending above and over a cab of the front loading waste collection vehicle. 2. The collection bin of claim 1 , wherein the weighing system comprises a scale. 3. The collection bin of claim 2 , wherein the scale is integrated with a floor surface of the enclosure. 4. The collection bin of claim 2 , wherein the scale comprises a load cell. 5. The collection bin of claim 2 , wherein the scale is configured to produce weight measurements with respect to the material disposed in the enclosure within an accuracy of 5 pounds or less. 6. The collection bin of claim 1 , wherein the weighing system is selectively activated in response to movement of the robotic arm. 7. The collection bin of claim 1 , wherein the coupling comprises a fork pocket. 8. The collection bin of claim 7 , wherein the weighing system comprises a scale having at least one load cell residing in the fork pocket. 9. The collection bin of claim 1 , wherein the weighing system comprises a processor configured to associate the weight measurements with data corresponding to the one or more waste containers. 10. The collection bin of claim 9 , wherein the data includes at least one of: a time a waste container is emptied into the enclosure by the robotic arm, a date a waste container is emptied into the enclosure by the robotic arm, a location of a waste container when emptied into the enclosure by the robotic arm, an owner of a waste container, a size of a waste container, and one or more previously taken weight measurements. 11. The collection bin of claim 9 , further comprising an RFID system configured to read information from an RFID tag attached to a waste container; and wherein the data comprises the information read from the RFID tag. 12. The collection bin of claim 9 , further comprising a GPS receiver configured to receive location information, and wherein the data comprises the location information. 13. A collection bin, comprising: an enclosure comprising a front wall and a rear wall connected by opposing side walls, the enclosure removably coupled to a front loading waste collection vehicle configured to dump material disposed in the enclosure into a hopper carried by the vehicle; an automated robotic arm supported by the rear wall of the enclosure, the robotic arm configured to obtain the material from one or more waste containers and dispose the material in the enclosure; and a weighing system comprising: a scale configured to weigh the material disposed in the enclosure by the robotic arm to produce weight measurements, and a processor configured to associate the weight measurements with data corresponding to the one or more waste containers, wherein the weighing system is self-contained on the enclosure, wherein the enclosure comprises a coupling configured to secure the enclosure to a lift comprising arms extending above and over a cab of the front loading waste collection vehicle. 14. The collection bin of claim 13 , wherein the scale comprises at least one load cell integrated with a floor surface of the enclosure. 15. The collection bin of claim 13 , wherein the scale is selectively activated in response to movement of the robotic arm. 16. The collection bin of claim 13 , wherein the coupling comprises a fork pocket. 17. The collection bin of claim 13 , wherein the data includes at least one of: a time a waste container is emptied into the enclosure by the robotic arm, a date a waste container is emptied into the enclosure by the robotic arm, a location of a waste container when emptied into the enclosure by the robotic arm, an owner of a waste container, a size of a waste container, and one or more previously taken weight measurements. 18. The collection bin of claim 13 , further comprising an RFID system configured to read information from an RFID tag attached to a waste container; and wherein the data comprises the information read from the RFID tag. 19. The collection bin of claim 13 , further comprising a GPS receiver configured to receive location information, and wherein the data comprises the location information.
