An automotive vehicle with a storage compartment has a cabin, a set of rear wheels located behind the cabin, a cargo space, and a closable integrated storage compartment located adjacent to the cabin, rearward of a rear-most seat of the automotive vehicle, and forward of the set of rear wheels. At least a portion of the storage compartment is positioned forward of a forward wall of the cargo space. The storage compartment has at least one sidewall enclosing an interior portion of the storage compartment and extending from a first side panel at a first side of the automotive vehicle toward a second side of the automotive vehicle, a first opening to the storage compartment at the first side of the automotive vehicle, and a first door at the first opening. The first door has a first step member with a horizontal step surface when open.

What is claimed is: 1. A pickup truck, comprising: a set of wheels; a cabin forming a part of a front portion of the pickup truck and coupled to the set of wheels, the cabin having at least one seat for an occupant; a cargo bed forming a rear portion of the pickup truck, the front portion and the rear portion forming a body of the pickup truck; a plurality of walls connected to and extending from a first side of the body of the pickup truck, the plurality of walls enclosing a storage space, the first side of the pickup truck located between a front of the pickup truck and a rear of the pickup truck, a portion of the storage space being positioned forward of a rear wall of the cabin of the pickup truck and a portion of the storage space being positioned behind the rear wall of the cabin; and a first door configured to provide access to the storage space at the side of the pickup truck. 2. The pickup truck of claim 1 , wherein the first door is coupled to the side of the pickup truck by a hinge, and wherein the first door is configured to carry enough weight to function as a weight-bearing horizontal step when open to facilitate access to a roof of the automotive vehicle. 3. The pickup truck of claim 1 , wherein the first door is configured with a cavity formed therein, the cavity provided to add to the total volume of the storage space. 4. The pickup truck of claim 1 , wherein the first door is configured with a cavity formed therein, the cavity provided to add to the total volume of the storage space, and a removable insert at an interior side of the first door, the removable insert when attached to the first door covering the cavity. 5. The pickup truck of claim 1 , wherein the first door is configured with a cavity formed therein, the cavity provided to add to the total volume of the storage space, and a removable insert at an interior side of the first door, the removable insert when attached to the first door covering the cavity, wherein the removable insert configured to be anchored within the storage space when removed from covering the first door cavity and the removable insert including positioning members configured to constrain movement of one or more articles carried in the storage space. 6. The pickup truck of claim 5 , wherein the removable insert is configured to hold at least one pair of skis. 7. The pickup truck of claim 1 , wherein the storage space comprises an asymmetric shape. 8. The pickup truck of claim 7 , wherein the asymmetric shape comprises a cross section with a plurality of sidewall sections. 9. The pickup truck of claim 1 , further comprising: a lock that prevents pickup truck operation when the first door is open. 10. The storage compartment assembly of claim 1 , further comprising: a second door configured to provide access to the storage space at a second side of the pickup truck, the second side of the pickup truck being opposite the first side of the pickup truck, the storage space extending from the first side of the pickup truck to the second side of the pickup truck. 11. A pickup truck, comprising: a cabin; a set of rear wheels located behind the cabin; a cargo bed; and a closable storage compartment assembly located adjacent to the cabin, rearward of a rear-most seat of the pickup truck, and extending rearward into the cargo bed, the closable storage compartment assembly comprising: at least one sidewall enclosing an interior portion of the storage compartment, the at least one sidewall connected to a body of the pickup truck at a first side of the pickup truck and extending from the first side of the pickup truck toward a second side of the pickup truck, a portion of the storage compartment being positioned forward of a forward wall of the cargo bed and extending rearward into the cargo bed, a first opening to the storage compartment at the first side of the pickup truck, a first door at the first opening configured to provide access to the storage compartment. 12. The pickup truck of claim 11 , wherein the first door is coupled to the side of the pickup truck by a hinge. 13. The pickup truck of claim 11 , wherein the first door is configured with a cavity formed therein, the cavity provided to add to the total volume of the storage space. 14. The pickup truck of claim 11 , wherein the first door is configured with a cavity formed therein, the cavity provided to add to the total volume of the storage space, and a removable insert at an interior side of the first door, the removable insert when attached to the first door covering the cavity. 15. The pickup truck of claim 11 , wherein the first door is configured with a cavity formed therein, the cavity provided to add to the total volume of the storage space, and a removable insert at an interior side of the first door, the removable insert when attached to the first door covering the cavity, wherein the removable insert configured to be anchored within the storage space when removed from covering the first door cavity and the removable insert including positioning members configured to constrain movement of one or more articles carried in the storage space. 16. The pickup truck of claim 11 , wherein the first door is configured to be a weight-bearing horizontal step when open to facilitate access to a roof of the pickup truck. 17. The pickup truck of claim 11 , further comprising: a latch mechanism to secure the first door in a closed position. 18. The pickup truck assembly of claim 11 , further comprising: a lock that prevents pickup truck operation when the first door is open. 19. The pickup truck of claim 11 , further comprising: a second door configured to provide access to the storage space at a second side of the pickup truck, the second side of the pickup truck being opposite the first side of the pickup truck, the storage space extending from the first side of the pickup truck to the second side of the pickup truck. 20. A pickup truck with a storage compartment, comprising: a cabin; a set of rear wheels located behind the cabin; a cargo bed; a support post defining the rear of the cabin and the forward edge of the cargo bed; and a closable storage compartment assembly located at the support post and extending just forward of and just rearward of the support post, the closable storage compartment assembly comprising: at least one sidewall enclosing an interior portion of a storage compartment, the at least one sidewall connected to a body of the pickup truck at a first side of the pickup truck and extending from the first side of the pickup truck toward a second side of the pickup truck, a first opening to the storage compartment at the first side of the pickup truck, a first door at the first opening, the first door configured to provide access to the storage compartment.
