Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A power distribution system includes a busway and a bus plug. A mechanical assembly rotatably mounts the bus plug relative to the busway. The system includes a remote racking device including a mechanism having a first mechanical component coupled to the bus plug and a second mechanical component coupled to the busway. The remote racking device rotates the bus plug relative to the busway about a rotation axis defined by the mechanical assembly based on mechanical interaction of the first mechanical component and the second mechanical component. Methods of connecting and disconnecting a bus plug relative to a busway with a remote racking device are also provided.

What is claimed is: 1. A remote racking device for connecting and disconnecting a bus plug relative to a busway, comprising: a frame having a slot; a lead screw having a threaded shaft rotatably mounted to the frame; a moving nut having a threaded aperture, the threaded shaft of the lead screw threadingly engages the threaded aperture of the moving nut; a pin having a first end extending from the moving nut and oriented to slide along the slot of the frame; and a hinge connected to the frame, wherein the hinge is configured to rotatably connect the frame to the busway. 2. The remote racking device of claim 1 , wherein the pin has a second end extending from the moving nut and the second end is configured to be coupled to the bus plug. 3. A power distribution system comprising: a busway and a bus plug; a mechanical assembly rotatably mounting the bus plug relative to the busway; a remote racking device including a mechanism having a first mechanical component coupled to the bus plug and a second mechanical component coupled to the busway, wherein the remote racking device is configured to rotate the bus plug relative to the busway about a rotation axis defined by the mechanical assembly based on mechanical interaction of the first mechanical component and the second mechanical component. 4. The power distribution system of claim 3 , including an actuator configured to impart a force on the mechanism to operate the mechanical interaction of the first mechanical component and the second mechanical component. 5. The power distribution system of claim 4 , wherein the actuator is a motor configured to impart a rotational force on the mechanism. 6. The power distribution system of claim 4 , including a controller configured to control the actuator from a predetermined distance away from the actuator. 7. The power distribution system of claim 3 , wherein the mechanical assembly includes a hinge assembly defining the rotation axis. 8. The power distribution system of claim 3 , wherein the mechanical assembly includes a bracket coupled to the busway, the bracket having an arcuate recess defining an arcuate path, and the bus plug includes a protrusion that slidingly engages the arcuate recess. 9. The power distribution system of claim 3 , including a pair of tabs fixed to the bus plug with a conductor of the bus plug positioned between the tabs, and wherein the tabs are spaced a predetermined distance from each other, wherein the predetermined distance is defined by a width of the busway. 10. The power distribution system of claim 3 , wherein the first mechanical component includes a moving nut and the second mechanical component includes a lead screw having a threaded shaft that threadingly engages a threaded aperture of the moving nut. 11. The power distribution system of claim 10 , including a pin extending from the moving nut and oriented to slide along a slot defined in a frame mechanically linked with the busway. 12. The power distribution system of claim 3 , wherein the first mechanical component and the second mechanical component define a rack having a first set of teeth and a pinion having a second set of teeth configured to engage the first set of teeth. 13. The power distribution system of claim 12 , including a second rack having a third set of teeth and a second pinion having a fourth set of teeth configured to engage the third set of teeth, and wherein the second set of teeth are configured to engage the fourth set of teeth. 14. The power distribution system of claim 3 , wherein the first mechanical component and the second mechanical component define a cam and a follower. 15. The power distribution system of claim 14 , wherein the cam includes a groove and the follower includes a protrusion configured to engage the groove. 16. The power distribution system of claim 3 , wherein the busway includes a bus bar having an electrical current. 17. The remote racking device of claim 1 , further comprising a mechanical assembly configured to rotatably mount the bus plug relative to the busway. 18. The remote racking device of claim 17 , wherein the mechanical assembly includes a bracket having an arcuate recess defining an arcuate path with which a protrusion of the bus plug is configured to slidingly engage. 19. The remote racking device of claim 17 , wherein the mechanical assembly includes a hinge assembly defining a rotation axis. 20. The remote racking device of claim 17 wherein the mechanical assembly includes a bracket having an arcuate recess defining an arcuate path with which a protrusion of the bus plug is configured to slidingly engage and wherein the mechanical assembly further includes a hinge assembly defining a rotation axis.
