Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A grill or BBQ appliance that is generally intended for outdoor use has a pivoting hood disposed in hinged connection with a grill body, both of which are raised above a firebox that receives a food support grate. The hood may include overhanging lights configured to provide optimal lighting through a range of hood positions.

What is claimed is: 1. A grilling apparatus, the apparatus comprising: a grill body comprising a firebox adapted to burn a source of fuel, the firebox comprising an upper rim, wherein the grill body is adapted to support a food grate along a lateral plane defining a food supporting region above the firebox; a hood comprising a forward end, a right side, a left side, a front cavity between a double wall portion of the forward end, and a face extending between the forward end and rearward portions of the right and left sides, wherein the hood is pivotably mounted to the grill body and pivotable above the food supporting region between a closed position and one or more open positions, wherein, in the closed position, the hood is spaced away from and extends above a forward portion of the food supporting region, and wherein the forward end of the hood translates rearward to progressively uncover at least a forward sub-portion of the forward portion of the food supporting region when the hood is pivoted toward the open position; a light module mounted to the hood within the front cavity and comprising a light to illuminate the food supporting region from an underside of the hood when the hood is in an open position, wherein when the hood is in the closed position the light module is positioned forward of an interior forward edge of the upper rim of the firebox such that the light module is offset from a vertical column of heat that rises from the firebox when the source of fuel is burned; and one or more wires electrically coupled to the light module for conducting electrical power thereto, the one or more wires extending from the grill body to the hood. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a switch electrically coupled to the one or more wires and operable to control delivery of electrical power to the light, and wherein the switch is selectively actuatable by a user to power the light on and off. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein operation of the switch is coordinated with angular position of the hood such that the switch is actuatable by the user to power the light on only when the hood is within one or more predefined ranges of angular positions between the closed position and a fully open position. 4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein when the hood is in the closed position the light module is positioned completely forward of the upper rim. 5. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a handle mounted to the forward end of the hood at a handle interface, wherein the light module is positioned lower than the handle interface when the hood is in the closed position. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the light comprise a halogen light. 7. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein when the hood is in the closed position the light module is positioned completely forward of the upper rim. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein when the hood is in the closed position the front cavity is positioned completely forward of the upper rim of the firebox. 9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the light module comprises a first light module mounted within the front cavity along a right lateral half of the hood and a second light module mounted within the front cavity along a left lateral half of the hood. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus further comprises a handle mounted to the forward end of the hood at a handle interface, and wherein the light module is positioned lower than the handle interface when the hood is in the closed position. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein when the hood is in the closed position the light module is positioned completely forward of the upper rim. 12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the light comprise a halogen light. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the light module comprises a first light module mounted within the front cavity along a right lateral half of the hood and a second light module mounted within the front cavity along a left lateral half of the hood. 14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein electrical power is conducted to the light module only when the hood is within a predefined range of angular positions between the closed position and the fully open position. 15. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an upper food support grate positioned above a rear portion of the food support region, and wherein when the hood is in a fully open position the light module is forward of the upper food support grate. 16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the hood includes a lower forward surface along the forward end of the hood that extends below and forward of the upper rim of the firebox when the hood is in the closed position. 17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the lower forward surface of the hood comprises a lower wall of the front cavity. 18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the lower forward surface of the hood extends rearwardly at an inclined angle when the hood is in the closed position. 19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the grill body further comprises a forward surface, forward of the firebox, that extends rearwardly toward the upper rim of the firebox at an inclined angle, and wherein the lower forward surface of the hood and the forward surface of the grill body interface when the hood is in the closed position. 20. A grilling apparatus, the apparatus comprising: a grill body comprising a firebox adapted to burn a source of fuel, the firebox comprising an upper rim, wherein the grill body is adapted to support a food grate along a lateral plane defining a food supporting region above the firebox; a hood comprising a forward end, a right side, a left side, a front cavity between a double wall portion of the forward end, and a face extending between the forward end and rearward portions of the right and left sides, wherein the hood is pivotably mounted to the grill body and pivotable above the food supporting region between a closed position and one or more open positions, wherein, in the closed position, the hood is spaced away from and extends above a forward portion of the food supporting region, and wherein the forward end of the hood translates rearward to progressively uncover at least a forward sub-portion of the forward portion of the food supporting region when the hood is pivoted toward the open position; at least a first light module and a second light module, the first light module mounted within the front cavity along a right lateral half of the hood and the second light module mounted within the front cavity along a left lateral half of the hood, wherein the first and second light modules comprise respective one or more first halogen lights and one or more second halogen lights to illuminate the food supporting region from an underside of the hood when the hood is in an open position, and wherein when the hood is in the closed position the first and second light modules are positioned forward of an interior forward edge of the upper rim of the firebox such that the first and second light modules are offset from a vertical column of heat that rises from the firebox when the source of fuel is burned; one or more wires electrically coupled to the first and second light modules and extending from the grill body to the hood to deliver power to the one or more first and second halogen lights; and a switch electrically coupled to the one or more wires and operable to control delivery of power to the one or more first and second halogen lights, wherein the switch is selectively actuatable by a user to power the one or mo
