Embodiments are described for a system of rendering object-based audio content through a system that includes individually addressable drivers, including at least one driver that is configured to project sound waves toward one or more surfaces within a listening environment for reflection to a listening area within the listening environment; a renderer configured to receive and process audio streams and one or more metadata sets associated with each of the audio streams and specifying a playback location of a respective audio stream; and a playback system coupled to the renderer and configured to render the audio streams to a plurality of audio feeds corresponding to the array of audio drivers in accordance with the one or more metadata sets.

What is claimed is: 1. A speaker system for playback of audio content in a listening environment, the speaker system comprising: an enclosure; an individually addressable front-firing driver placed in the enclosure to project sound directly towards a listener in the listening environment, wherein the front-firing driver is a tweeter; an individually addressable upward-firing driver placed in the enclosure to project sound off of at least one surface of the listening environment to be reflected back down to the listener; a renderer in the enclosure determining a first portion of the audio content to be addressed to the front-firing driver and a second portion of the audio content to be addressed to the upward-firing driver, and wherein the front-firing driver and the upward-firing driver are individually addressable by the rendering component; and a storage storing a speaker profile defining certain driver characteristics of the front-firing and upward-firing drivers, acoustic characteristics of each driver, a spatial position of a center of each driver relative to a front center point of the enclosure, and an angle of the upward-firing driver with respect to a defined plane. 2. The speaker system of claim 1 wherein the upward-firing driver is placed to project sound waves at an angle between 45 to 90 degrees relative to a horizontal axis of the enclosure parallel to a ground plane of the listening environment. 3. The speaker system of claim 2 wherein the at least one surface comprises a ceiling of the listening environment in a ceiling plane parallel to the ground plane. 4. The speaker system of claim 3 wherein the upward-firing driver is placed to propagate sound waves directly upward to the ceiling of the listening environment. 5. The speaker system of claim 4 wherein the upward-firing driver comprises a full range driver. 6. The speaker system of claim 2 wherein the upward-firing driver is addressed through an input to the speaker system that is configured to receive an audio signal for producing reflected sound, and further wherein the audio content comprises a hybrid object and channel-based audio stream that is converted by the renderer into individual audio streams designated for each of the front-firing driver and upward-firing driver. 7. The speaker system of claim 5 wherein the front-firing driver is driven by sub-channels containing sound components having a high degree of directionality, and the upward-firing driver is driven by sub-channels containing sound components that are omni-directional. 8. The speaker system of claim 7 wherein the sound projected from the upward-firing driver comprises ambient sound content. 9. The speaker system of claim 7 wherein the audio content transmitted from the renderer to the front-firing driver and upward-firing driver comprises a hybrid object and channel-based audio stream that is converted by a renderer into individual audio streams designated for each of the individually addressable drivers. 10. The speaker system of claim 9 further comprising a virtual height filter circuit coupled to the upward-firing driver and applying a frequency response curve to a signal transmitted to the upward-firing driver to create a target transfer curve, and wherein the virtual height filter compensates for height cues present in sound waves transmitted directly through the listening environment in favor of height cues present in the sound reflected off the at least one surface of the listening environment. 11. The speaker system of claim 1 wherein the enclosure embodies a soundbar, and wherein the front firing driver comprises at least part of a high-resolution center channel driver. 12. The speaker system of claim 1 wherein each individually addressable driver is uniquely identified within in accordance with a network protocol supported by a bi-directional interconnect coupling the speaker system to the renderer. 13. A speaker system for playback of audio content in a listening environment, the speaker system comprising: an enclosure; an individually addressable front-firing driver placed in the enclosure to project sound directly towards a listener in the listening environment, wherein the front-firing driver is a tweeter; an individually addressable upward-firing driver placed in the enclosing to project sound off of at least one surface of the listening environment to be reflected back down to the listener; a renderer in the enclosure determining a first portion of the audio content to be addressed to the front-firing driver and a second portion of the audio content to be addressed to the upward-firing driver, and wherein the front-firing driver and the upward-firing drivel individually addressable by the renderer, wherein the upward-firing driver is addressed through an input to the speaker system that is configured to receive an audio signal for producing reflected sound, and further wherein the audio content comprises a hybrid object and channel-based audio stream that is converted by the renderer into individual audio streams designated for each of the front-firing driver and upward-firing driver. 14. The speaker system of claim 13 wherein the upward-firing driver is placed to project sound waves at an angle between 45 to 90 degrees relative to a horizontal axis of the enclosure parallel to a ground plane of the listening environment. 15. The speaker system of claim 13 wherein the audio content transmitted from the renderer to the front-firing driver and upward-firing driver comprises a hybrid object and channel-based audio stream that is converted by a renderer into individual audio streams designated for each of the individually addressable drivers.
