Abstract

A system and method is disclosed herein that provides a multi-device, multi-screen experience where original content, other content, and associated data can interact and flow between a primary display device and one or more secondary devices. More particularly, the system and method disclosed herein provides for the delivery and management of digital media content to an end user by providing the multi-device, multi-screen experience where original content, other content, and associated data can interact and flow between devices. The system and method enables an individual to create a virtually universal home commerce and monitoring ecosystem by integrating a device into their home Wi-Fi and content consumption systems.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1. A method for managing a presentation of content on one or more display devices in a premises, the method comprising:
receiving, by a data communication and processing device, source content from a content provider and analyzing the source content to recognize an item displayed within the source content;
updating data presentation profile information with the recognized item displayed within the source content;
obtaining, by the data communication and processing device, a search query based on the data presentation profile information that includes the recognized item within the source content;
obtaining, by the communication and processing device, electronic information from an electronic information sending device associated with an object in the premises, with the electronic information configured to identify a type of the object and descriptive information providing characteristics about the object in the premises;
automatically refining, by the data communication and processing device, the search query based on the identified type of the object and the characteristics relating to the object to configure the search query to identify content to be displayed on a display device in the premises;
identifying, by the data communication and processing device, additional media content based on the refined search query; and
accessing and providing, by the data communication and processing device, the identified additional media content to the display device in the premises to be displayed thereon, wherein the display device is a device that is different than the electronic information sending device.

2. The method for managing a presentation of content according to claim 1 , wherein the data presentation profile information comprises user profile information associated with a user of the data communication and processing device and the display device in the premises.

3. The method for managing a presentation of content according to claim 2 , further comprising storing the user profile information in an electronic database that relates to a user of the data communication and processing device.

4. The method for managing a presentation of content according to claim 1 , wherein the search query is accessed from a plurality of pre-designated searches based on the recognized item in the source content.

The method for managing a presentation of content according to claim 1 , further comprising accessing, by the data communication and processing device, the additional media content from a second data content source by applying the refined search query on the Internet to identify the additional media content.

6. The method for managing a presentation of content according to claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving by a navigation tool on the display device at least a portion of the additional media content to be displayed thereon; and
generating, by the navigation tool, control instructions transmitted to another display device to control a display thereon of metadata relating to the object and the additional media content in order to provide a coordinated presentation of information on the respective display devices.

7. The method for managing a presentation of content according to claim 1 ,
wherein the electronic information sending device comprises a radio-frequency identification device (RFID) tag associated with the object, and
wherein the characteristics relating to the object comprises at least one of size, brand, purchase date and expiration date of the object.

8. A data communication and processing device for managing a presentation of content on one or more devices in a premises, the data communication and processing device comprising:
at least one input configured to receive:
source content from a content provider; and
electronic information from an electronic information sending device associated with an object in the premises, with the electronic information configured to identify a type of the object and descriptive information providing characteristics about the object in the premises;

a processor having software that, when executed on the processor, causes the processor to:
analyze the source content to recognize an item displayed within the source content;
update data presentation profile information with the recognized item displayed within the source content;
obtain a search query based on the data presentation profile information that includes the recognized item within the source content;
automatically refine the search query based on the identified type of the object and the characteristics relating to the object to configure the search query to identify content to be displayed on a display device in the premises;
identify additional media content based on the refined search query; and
transmit, by at least one output of the data communication and processing device, the identified additional media content to the display device in the premises to be displayed thereon, wherein the display device is a device that is different than the electronic information sending device.

9. The data communication and processing device according to claim 8 , wherein the data presentation profile information comprises user profile information associated with a user of the display device in the premises.

10. The data communication and processing device according to claim 9 , further comprising electronic memory configured store the user profile information that relates to a user of the data communication and processing device.

11. The data communication and processing device according to claim 8 , wherein the software, when executed by the processor, further causes the processor to access the search query from a plurality of pre-designated searches based on the recognized item in the source content.

The data communication and processing device according to claim 8 , wherein the software, when executed by the processor, further causes the processor to access the additional media content from a second data content source by applying the refined search query on the Internet to identify the additional media content.

13. The data communication and processing device content according to claim 8 , wherein the software, when executed by the processor, further causes the processor to:
receive by a navigation tool on the display device at least a portion of the additional media content to be displayed thereon; and
generate, by the navigation tool, control instructions transmitted to another display device to control a display thereon of metadata relating to the object and the additional media content in order to provide a coordinated presentation of information on the respective display devices.

14. The data communication and processing device according to claim 8 ,
wherein the electronic information sending device comprises a radio-frequency identification device (RFID) tag associated with the object, and
wherein the characteristics relating to the object comprises at least one of size, brand, purchase date and expiration date of the object.

15. A system for managing a presentation of content on one or more devices in a premises, the system comprising:
a display device;
an electronic information sending device associated with an object in the premises; and
a data communication and processing device comprising at least one input configured to receive source content from a content provider, and electronic information from the electronic information sending device, with the electronic information configured to identify a type of the object and descriptive information providing char
