Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of registering distributed devices includes discovering a plurality of devices at a central panel or server, localizing the devices, and authorizing the devices with a mobile device communicating with the central panel or server. The method also includes registering the devices with the central panel. The model can include verifying link quality with each of the devices before registering the devices with the central panel by comparing signal quality between each device and a central panel with a pre-defined threshold level.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of registering and authenticating a plurality of distributed devices comprising: localizing the plurality of devices, wherein localizing the plurality of devices includes: predicting a signal fingerprint for a device installation location on a floor plan of each device of the plurality of devices, wherein the floor plan indicates a device installation location for each device at which the device is expected to be installed, and the predicted signal fingerprint for each expected device installation location includes a predicted characteristic of signals received at the expected device installation location from each of the devices at theft respective expected device installation locations; prior to installing any of the devices in the building, identifying two devices of the devices for which the predicted signal fingerprint for the device locations of the two devices differ by lass than a threshold amount; after each of the devices is installed in the building, receiving at the device's actual installation location a measured signal fingerprint for each device, wherein the measured signal fingerprint for each device includes a characteristic of signals received and transmitted by the device with each of the other devices at each of their respective actual installation locations; and determining the determined installation location of the respective devices once installed in the building based on multiple, comparisons of the respective predicted signal fingerprints predicted for each of the expected device installation locations and the respective measured signal fingerprints measured at each of the devices at their actual installation locations; authorizing the devices with a mobile device communicating with a central panel or server based on an outcome of the comparison; and registering the devices that are authorized with the central panel or server; and automatically mitigating ambiguity between the two devices such that the difference of the predicted signal fingerprint for the device locations of the two devices is no longer less than the threshold amount. 2. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein predicting the signal fingerprint for each expected device installation location includes using a site specific RF propagation model to predict the predicted characteristic. 3. A method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the site specific RF propagation model utilizes the floor plan, building material information, device RF output power; and antenna patterns to generate estimates for predicting the signal fingerprints. 4. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein determining the determined installation location of each device includes maximizing global similarity between the predicted signal fingerprints and the measured signal fingerprints to produce a one-to-one association between the devices and the expected device installation locations on the floor plan. 5. A method as recited in claim 4 , further comprising determining whether any of the devices is actually installed in an incorrect location by identifying any device for which the measured signal fingerprint matches the predicted signal fingerprint for a device of a different type. 6. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein authorizing the devices includes determining that one of the devices should not be authorized due to the received measured signal fingerprint for the device not matching any of the predicted signal fingerprints. 7. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein measuring a signal fingerprint for each device includes using a wireless mobile device proximate to one of the devices that is non-wireless to generate a signal for generating a signal fingerprint for the non-wireless device. 8. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the floor plan further indicates a device type associated with the expected device installation location of each respective device on the floor plan, the method further comprising: receiving for each device a device type associated with the received measured signal fingerprint; and determining whether any device of the devices is actually installed in an incorrect location by identifying when the expected device installation location determined for a device has a device type that is different than the device type received with the measured signal fingerprint for the device. 9. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising detecting at least one of a missing device, a misconfigured device, or a malfunctioning device of the devices based on an outcome of the comparison. 10. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising configuring a device of the devices based on an outcome of the comparison. 11. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein mitigating the ambiguity includes automatically rearranging device locations of the two devices on the floor plan associated with the two devices. 12. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising using the determined installation locations determined for the respective devices to display data output by the devices. 13. A method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the data output by the devices is displayed on the floorplan. 14. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein determining the determined installation location of all the devices includes iteratively generating a cost matrix that represents a similarity of each predicted signal fingerprint with all of the measured signal fingerprints or a similarity of each measured signal fingerprint with all of the predicted signal fingerprints. 15. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein mitigating the ambiguity includes automatically temporarily ignoring one of the two devices.
