Official abstract text for this publication.
A machine arrangement, for sequentially processing sheet-type substrates, includes a plurality of different processing stations, one of which includes a non-impact printing device that prints the substrates. The processing station, including the non-impact printing device, also includes a printing cylinder, on the circumference of which, the non-impact printing device that prints the substrates is arranged. On the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder, four substrates are or can be placed behind each other in the circumferential direction. Each of the substrates that are to be conveyed are retained in one of a force-locking and a form-fitting manner on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder by at least one retaining element.

The invention claimed is: 1. A machine arrangement for the sequential processing of sheet-format substrates, comprising; a plurality of processing stations, wherein one of the plurality of processing stations includes a non-impact printing unit for printing each of the substrates, wherein the non-impact printing unit is configured as a separately manufactured one of a unit and functional subassembly and is one of mounted in its own frame as a separately installed unit and as a functional subassembly; a printing cylinder in the one of the plurality of processing stations that includes the non-impact printing unit, wherein the non-impact printing unit for printing each of the substrates is arranged on a periphery of the printing cylinder; a circumferential surface of the printing cylinder, wherein at least three substrates are one of arranged and at least can be arranged one behind the other, in a circumferential direction of the printing cylinder, on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder; at least five individually controlled inkjet printing units in the non-impact printing unit, wherein the at least five individually controlled inkjet printing units are arranged, one behind the other, in a transport direction of the substrates; a plurality of retaining elements on the printing cylinder, wherein each of the substrates to be transported is held in one of a force-locking and a form-fitting manner on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder, by at least one retaining element of the plurality of retaining elements, and wherein each one of the plurality of retaining elements, which is assigned to a separate one of the substrates being processed, is actuated independently of other ones of the plurality of retaining elements; and a transport module, in the form of a substrate guide unit, with no substrate processing unit, the transport guide unit being disposed one of immediately upstream and immediately downstream of the one of the plurality of processing stations that includes the printing cylinder, wherein the transport module is arranged in a transport module frame and is configured as a transverse catwalk platform. 2. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein a positioning of a substrate on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder is supported by blower air directed onto the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder. 3. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein the non-impact printing unit for printing the substrates is configured such that it can print each of the substrates at least nearly over its entire width, oriented transversely to the transport direction. 4. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein the printing cylinder is configured as being one of triple-sized and quadruple-sized. 5. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , one of wherein a first transfer drum, configured as being one of double-sized and triple-sized, is disposed immediately upstream of the printing cylinder, and wherein a second transfer drum, configured as being one of double-sized and triple-sized, is disposed immediately downstream of the printing cylinder. 6. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein a turning device is provided, which turning device enables a back side of the substrates to also be printed subsequently in the process by the use of a further non-impact printing unit, which further non-impact printing unit is disposed downstream, in the transport direction of the substrates. 7. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein each one of the plurality of processing stations, that each comprise at least one printing unit, each further includes a transport apparatus having a plurality of transport units arranged one behind the other in the transport direction of the substrates and each having at least one transport cylinder. 8. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein the one processing station of the plurality of processing stations, and having the printing cylinder, includes a substrate guide unit and a substrate processing unit, wherein the substrate guide unit, which is usable for transporting the substrates, has at least one transport cylinder, and wherein the substrate processing unit has at least one printing unit. 9. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one retaining element of the plurality of retaining elements, and being usable for retaining one of the substrates to be transported on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder, is configured as a gripper. 10. The machine arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the plurality of retaining elements are configured as grippers and are each arranged in a channel formed on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder. 11. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein substrates to be transported on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder are each held on the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder by the use of suction air. 12. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein a primer application unit, usable for priming each of the substrates, and a dryer, usable for drying the primer that has been applied to the substrates, are provided as additional ones of the plurality of processing stations, and wherein the primer application unit and the dryer are both arranged upstream of the non-impact printing unit, in the transport direction of the substrates. 13. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein a further processing station, of the plurality of processing stations, and having a dryer for drying the substrates printed by the non-impact printing unit, is arranged downstream of the respective one of the plurality of processing stations having the non-impact printing unit for printing each of the substrates, in the transport direction of the substrates. 14. The machine arrangement according to claim 1 , wherein, downstream of the one of the plurality of processing stations having the dryer for drying the printed substrates, in the transport direction of the substrates, an additional processing station, having a coating unit, is provided, and further wherein, downstream of the coating unit, yet another processing station, having an additional dryer, is provided.
