Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A reservoir provided in a hard-point fixture is pre-loaded with a curable adhesive, where the reservoir is protected from the curing radiation. The fixture is placed on a target surface and the adhesive is extruded from the reservoir into a space between the fixture and the target surface. An irradiating device to cure the adhesive is provided in the fixture and activated to couple the fixture to the surface. Once the curing process is complete, the fixture is released from the placement system leaving the fixture affixed to the target surface.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A hard-point fixture, comprising: a body having first and second surfaces; a channel provided in the body having a first opening defined in the first surface of the body and a second opening defined in the second surface of the body; a movable plunger disposed in the channel and configured to move from a first position to a second position; an irradiating device, attached to the body, configured to provide irradiating energy to a portion of the first surface of the body; a detector, embedded in the body, configured to detect the irradiating energy output from the irradiating device; and a controller, coupled to the irradiating device and the detector, configured to control the irradiating device by applying power to the irradiating device for a first period of time as a function of the detected irradiating energy. 2. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , further comprising: a lip structure disposed on the body first surface to define an adhesion surface adjacent the channel first opening. 3. The hard-point fixture of claim 2 , further comprising: a temporary attachment mechanism coupled to the first surface of the body. 4. The hard-point fixture of claim 3 , wherein the temporary attachment mechanism comprises at least one of: a magnet; a suction cup; or a low to medium-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive. 5. The hard-point fixture of claim 4 , wherein the temporary attachment mechanism is provided on the lip structure. 6. The hard-point fixture of claim 2 , wherein the lip structure comprises a magnet. 7. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , further comprising: a module having a reservoir defined therein, wherein a first module opening is fluidly coupled to the module reservoir, wherein the module is removably positioned in the channel such that the first module opening is aligned with the channel first opening, and wherein the plunger is positioned in the module reservoir. 8. The hard-point fixture of claim 7 , wherein the module further comprises: adhesive material disposed in the reservoir between the plunger positioned at the first plunger position and the first module opening. 9. The hard-point fixture of claim 8 , wherein the adhesive material is one of: a UV-curable epoxy; an IR-curable epoxy; a two component epoxy; a degradable adhesive; or a heat-curable epoxy. 10. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the body comprises a material that permits irradiating energy to pass through. 11. The hard-point fixture of claim 10 , wherein a portion of the body surrounding the channel blocks irradiating energy from passing into the channel. 12. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , wherein: the controller is coupled to the plunger, and wherein the controller is further configured to energize the irradiating device when the plunger has been detected as being located at the second position. 13. The hard-point fixture of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further configured to delay energizing the irradiating device a predetermined delay time after the plunger has been detected as arriving at the second position in the channel. 14. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , further comprising: adhesive material disposed in the channel and located between the channel first opening and the plunger located at the plunger first position. 15. The hard-point fixture of claim 14 , wherein the adhesive material is one of: a UV-curable epoxy; an IR-curable epoxy; a two component epoxy; a degradable adhesive; or a heat-curable epoxy. 16. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , wherein the irradiating device is configured to provide one of: light in the ultraviolet spectrum; light in the infrared spectrum; or heat. 17. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to: energize the irradiating device for a predetermined period of time. 18. The hard-point fixture of claim 1 , further comprising: a power module, coupled to the irradiating device and the controller, configured to power the irradiating device, wherein the controller is configured to cause power to be applied to the irradiating device by the power module. 19. A method of attaching a hard-point fixture to a target surface, the method comprising: providing a hard-point fixture, wherein the hard-point fixture comprises: a body having first and second surfaces; a channel provided in the body having a first opening defined in the first surface of the body and a second opening defined in the second surface of the body; a movable plunger disposed in the channel and configured to move from a first position to a second position; an irradiating device, attached to the body, configured to provide irradiating energy to a portion of the first surface of the body; and a detector, embedded in the body, configured to detect the irradiating energy output from the irradiating device; placing an adhesive in the channel; placing the hard-point fixture on a target surface to define an enclosed space between the hard-point fixture and the target surface; moving the plunger and extruding a portion of the adhesive from the channel into the enclosed space; activating the irradiating device to emit irradiating energy; and curing the extruded adhesive in the enclosed space by: exposing the extruded adhesive to the emitted irradiating energy; measuring, as a function of the detected irradiating energy, an amount of irradiating energy to which the extruded adhesive has been exposed; and ceasing to expose the extruded adhesive to the irradiating energy when the measured amount of irradiating energy has reached a predetermined level. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein placing the hard-point fixture on the target surface further comprises: temporarily affixing the hard-point fixture at a first location on the target surface; removing the hard-point fixture from the first location on the target surface; and placing the hard-point fixture at a second location on the target surface, wherein the first location is different from the second location. 21. The method of claim 19 , wherein curing the extruded adhesive comprises passing the irradiating energy through the body. 22. The method of claim 19 , wherein curing the extruded adhesive comprises exposing the extruded adhesive to the irradiating energy for a predetermined period of time. 23. The method of claim 19 , wherein the irradiating energy comprises one of: light in the ultraviolet spectrum; heat; or light in the infrared spectrum.
