Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical camera system is provided which includes a plurality of imaging devices each having a tunable iris configured to change between at least two different sized numerical apertures. A video stream is produced at a frame rate greater than or equal to about 20 frames per second from first and second images produced by respective sensors and tunable irises of at least two of the imaging devices, the tunable irises controlled to different numerical apertures, the first images acquired at a respective first numerical aperture of a first imaging device and the second images acquired at a respective second numerical aperture of a second imaging device, different from the respective first numerical aperture. The video stream alternates between the first images and the second images so that the video stream results in a three-dimensional effect at a display device when the video stream is rendered thereon.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical camera system comprising: a plurality of imaging devices having a common field of view, each of the plurality of imaging devices respectively comprising: a tunable iris configured to change between at least two numerical apertures of different sizes; one or more lenses configured to collect light using the tunable iris; and a sensor configured to produce images from the light received from the one or more lenses and the tunable iris; a single body, wherein respective tunable irises, and respective lenses, of each of the plurality of imaging devices are all housed within the single body, the single body comprising a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end configured for positioning adjacent tissue being imaged by the plurality of imaging devices; a common lens configured to further collect the light from the tissue, the common lens located at the distal end of the single body, the light being conveyed by the common lens to the respective tunable irises, and respective lenses of the plurality of imaging devices; a video processing unit configured to: produce a video stream at a frame rate that is greater than or equal to about 20 frames per second from first images and second images produced by respective sensors and respective tunable irises of at least two of the plurality of imaging devices, the respective tunable irises alternately controlled to different numerical apertures as the video stream is being produced, the first images acquired at a respective first numerical aperture of a first imaging device and the second images acquired at a respective second numerical aperture of a second imaging device, the respective second numerical aperture different from the respective first numerical aperture, the video stream comprising video frames that alternate between the first images acquired at the respective first numerical aperture and the second images acquired at the respective second numerical aperture, the first images and the second images alternately acquired in real-time for about equal time periods; and adjust one or more lighting parameters of the first images and the second images prior to producing the video stream; and, a display device in communication with the video processing unit, the display device configured to provide a real-time rendering of the video stream, as received from the video processing unit, the respective first numerical aperture and the respective second numerical aperture selected so that the video stream results in a three-dimensional effect at the display device when the video stream is rendered thereon due to alternation of the first images, acquired at the respective first numerical aperture, and the second images, acquired at the respective second numerical aperture, the first images and the second images alternately rendered in real-time at the display device for about the equal time periods. 2. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the frame rate is greater than 30 frames per second. 3. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the video processing unit is further configured to control a first respective tunable iris of the first imaging device to the respective first numerical aperture and control a second respective tunable iris of the second imaging device to the respective second numerical aperture. 4. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the respective first numerical aperture of the first images and the respective second numerical aperture of the second images are each fixed. 5. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the respective first numerical aperture of the first images and the respective second numerical aperture of the second images alternate between at least two respective numerical apertures of different sizes. 6. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the respective first numerical aperture of the first images is fixed and the respective second numerical aperture of the second images alternate between at least two respective numerical apertures of different sizes. 7. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein each of the respective tunable irises of the plurality of imaging devices are configured to automatically alternate between two respective numerical apertures. 8. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , further comprising a video buffering unit configured to one or more of buffer and sequence the first images and the second images prior to being streamed by the video processing unit. 9. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the first images have a respective depth of field is in a range of about 5 mm to about 100 mm. 10. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the second images have a respective second depth of field is in a range of about 2mm to about 80 mm. 11. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the second images have a smaller resolution than the first images. 12. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the display device comprises a heads-up display (HUD) device. 13. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the video processing unit is further configured to adjust one or more lighting parameters of the first images and the second images prior to producing the video stream by one or more of: balancing respective brightness of one or more of the first images and the second images; balancing respective gain values of one or more of the first images and the second images; and, performing brightness matching on one or more of the first images and the second images prior to producing the video stream. 14. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the single body is configured for use with a surgical port. 15. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , further comprising a tracking device configured to be tracked by a navigation system. 16. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the display device comprises a flat panel display. 17. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , wherein the respective first numerical aperture and the respective second numerical aperture are selected such that the first images have a higher resolution and a lower depth of field than the second images. 18. The surgical camera system of claim 1 , further comprising a reference clock configured to generate time pulses, and wherein the first images and the second images are acquired at respective rising edges of alternating time pulses generated by the reference clock.
