A fluid dispensing apparatus may be used to dispense a paint fluid from a paint container that is under pressure and that has a pierceable membrane. The fluid dispensing apparatus may include a valve body having a bore, an adaptor having a bore and a piercing member, and a nozzle having a bore. The fluid dispensing apparatus may be operable to pierce the pierceable membrane to communicate the paint within the paint container with the adaptor bore and with the valve body bore. The nozzle may be operable to permit the paint to flow under the pressure out of the paint container, through the adaptor bore, through the valve body bore and through the nozzle bore to ambient.

I claim: 1. A fluid dispensing apparatus to be releasably coupled to a paint container that lacks an internal valve and stores paint to be expelled from the paint container by a propellant, the fluid dispensing apparatus comprising: a valve body having a bore defining an interior passage that the paint passes through while the paint is being dispensed from the paint container; a nozzle in fluid communication with the bore of the valve body, said nozzle being adjustable to selectively cause the paint to be dispensed through the bore of the valve body; and an adaptor coupled to the valve body, wherein the adaptor comprises: (i) a releasable connector that cooperates with a compatible connector of the paint container to releasably couple the adaptor to the paint container, (ii) a piercing member that defines an interior passage and is positioned to puncture a membrane provided to the paint container to establish fluid communication between the paint container and the bore of the valve body, and (iii) a locking structure that interferes with separation of the adaptor from the valve body during removal of the fluid dispensing apparatus from the paint container. 2. The fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the adaptor further comprises a threaded section that engages compatible threading provided to the valve body as a result of rotation of the adaptor relative to the valve body in a first direction. 3. The fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the locking structure contacts a portion of the valve body to interfere with rotation of the adaptor relative to the valve body in a second direction that causes the threaded section of the adaptor to disengage the compatible threading provided to the valve body. 4. The fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the locking structure extends between the adaptor and the valve body to interfere with rotation of the adaptor in a second direction, the second direction being opposite of the first direction, during removal of the valve body from the paint container. 5. The fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the locking structure comprises a post that extends through a portion of the adaptor, into an underside of the valve body. 6. The fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the post extends between reinforcing structures provided to the valve body. 7. The fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein: the releasable connector of the adaptor comprises threading; the compatible connector of the paint container comprises compatible threading; and engagement of the threading with the compatible threading defines a range of travel of the valve body toward the paint container during installation, causing the piercing member to puncture the membrane along the range of travel. 8. A painting system comprising: a paint container defining an interior space that lacks an internal valve; paint and a propellant stored under pressure within the interior space to be expelled from the paint container; and a fluid dispensing apparatus releasably coupled to a paint container to control dispensing of the paint from the paint container, the fluid dispensing apparatus comprising: a valve body having a bore defining an interior passage that the paint passes through while the paint is being dispensed from the paint container; a nozzle in fluid communication with the bore of the valve body, said nozzle being adjustable to selectively cause the paint to be dispensed through the bore of the valve body; and an adaptor coupled to the valve body, wherein the adaptor comprises: (i) a releasable connector that cooperates with a compatible connector of the paint container to releasably couple the adaptor to the paint container, (ii) a piercing member that defines an interior passage and is positioned to puncture a membrane provided to the paint container to establish fluid communication between the paint container and the bore of the valve body, and (iii) a locking structure that interferes with separation of the adaptor from the valve body during removal of the fluid dispensing apparatus from the paint container. 9. The painting system of claim 8 , wherein the adaptor further comprises a threaded section that engages compatible threading provided to the valve body as a result of rotation of the adaptor relative to the valve body in a first direction. 10. The painting system of claim 9 , wherein the locking structure contacts a portion of the valve body to interfere with rotation of the adaptor relative to the valve body in a second direction that causes the threaded section of the adaptor to disengage the compatible threading provided to the valve body. 11. The painting system of claim 9 , wherein the locking structure extends between the adaptor and the valve body to interfere with rotation of the adaptor in a second direction, the second direction being opposite of the first direction, during removal of the valve body from the paint container. 12. The painting system of claim 8 , wherein the locking structure comprises a post that extends through a portion of the adaptor, into an underside of the valve body. 13. The painting system of claim 12 , wherein the post extends between reinforcing structures provided to the valve body. 14. The painting system of claim 8 , wherein: the releasable connector of the adaptor comprises threading; the compatible connector of the paint container comprises compatible threading; and engagement of the threading with the compatible threading defines a range of travel of the valve body toward the paint container during installation, causing the piercing member to puncture the membrane along the range of travel. 15. The painting system of claim 8 further comprising: a container cap that is pierced by the piercing member to establish fluid communication between the interior space and the fluid dispensing apparatus, wherein the container cap comprises: a base, a cylindrical connection element projecting upwardly from the base, the connection element comprising the compatible connector of the paint container, and a collar that extends entirely about an exterior periphery of the base, wherein the collar defines a downward-opening annular channel cooperating with a rim of the paint container, the rim defining an aperture that is closed by the container cap. 16. The painting system of claim 15 , wherein the compatible connector of the paint container comprises threading provided along a region of the cylindrical connection element, and the releasable connector of the adaptor comprises threading engaging the threading provided along the region of the cylindrical connection element. 17. A method of forming a fluid dispensing apparatus that is to be releasably coupled to a paint container to control dispensing of the paint from the paint container, the method comprising: causing engagement between threading provided to an adaptor and threading provided to a valve body to establish a flow passage between a piercing member of the adaptor and a bore defining an interior passage through the valve body, wherein the engagement is caused by rotating at least one of the adaptor and the valve body relative to another one of the adaptor and the valve body in a first angular direction; and installing a locking structure between the adaptor and the valve body to interfere with relative rotation between the adaptor and the valve body in a second angular direction, the second angular direction being opposite the first angular direction. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherei
