Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A patient support apparatus, such as a hospital bed, includes an alert light assembly or an alert light module having separate zones that are individually illuminated to convey information regarding respective alert conditions. The zones each have indicia related to a particular condition of the patient support apparatus. The illuminated zones are each sufficiently large so as to be seen from afar, such as on the order of ten feet or more. Alternatively or additionally, a GUI of the patient support apparatus displays alert indicia as part of a screen saver. Further alternatively or additionally, the patient support apparatus illuminates an alert light in a manner indicating an optimal time for taking a patient's vital signs.

The invention claimed is: 1. A patient support apparatus comprising a bed frame having a head end, a foot end, and a pair of laterally spaced part sides, the bed frame being configured to support a person, the bed frame having a lateral frame member at the foot end, a set of alert lights coupled to the lateral frame member and arranged to emit light upwardly, and a footboard coupled to the bed frame, the footboard having a set of light pipes overlying the alert lights and extending from a bottom of the footboard toward a top of the footboard, upper ends of the light pipes being visible and emitting light from a light emitting region at the top of the footboard. 2. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a translucent lens overlying the upper ends of the light pipes. 3. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , Therein the set of alert lights are included as part of a light emitting diode (LED) strip. 4. The patient support apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the lateral frame member has a top wall formed to include an elongated opening and the LED strip emits light upwardly through the elongated opening. 5. The patient support apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the LED strip includes four zones, each zone capable of emitting two different colors. 6. The patient support apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the two different colors comprise green and at least one of amber and red. 7. The patient support apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the set of light pipes comprises four light pipes, each light pipe being situated over a respective zone of the four zones. 8. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the set of alert lights comprise four alert lights and the set of light pipes comprise four light pipes, each light pipe overlying a respective one of the alert lights. 9. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of indicia on the footboard beneath the light emitting region, each indicia relating to a particular feature of the patient support apparatus associated with a respective alert light. 10. The patient support apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of indicia includes a first indicia related to a patient position monitoring system, a second indicia related to an angle at which a head section of the upper frame is raised, a third indicia related to a position of the upper frame relative to the base frame, and a fourth indicia related to a position of a siderail that is coupled to the upper frame. 11. The patient support apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of indicia on the footboard are included on a sticker that is adhered to the footboard beneath the light emitting region. 12. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the footboard is selectively detachable from the bed frame. 13. The patient support apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the lateral frame member has a pair of spaced apart apertures that receive posts extending downwardly from the bottom of the footboard when the footboard is coupled to the lateral frame member and wherein the set of alert lights is situated between the pair of spaced apart apertures. 14. The patient support apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the lateral frame member has a top wall formed to include the pair of spaced apart apertures and formed to include at least one opening through which the set of alert lights emit light upwardly. 15. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the lateral frame member includes an interior region and partition walls are provided in the interior region to separate each alert light of the set of alert lights from the other alert lights of the set of alert lights. 16. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the bottom of footboard is formed to include at least one opening through which bottom ends of the light pipes are exposed. 17. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light pipes are made of a transparent material. 18. The patient support apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the transparent material comprises acrylic. 19. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the top of the footboard is formed to include a pair of spaced apart grip handles and wherein the light emitting region is situated between the pair of spaced apart grip handles. 20. The patient support apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the footboard includes openings beneath each grip handle of the pair of spaced apart grip handles and wherein portions of the light pipes are situated between the openings.
