A new chromium-containing fluorination catalyst is described. The catalyst comprises an amount of zinc that promotes activity and from 0.1 to 8.0% by weight of the chromium in the catalyst based on the total weight of the chromium is present as chromium (VI). The use of the zinc-promoted, chromium-containing catalyst in a fluorination process in which a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the vapor-phase at elevated temperatures is also described.

I claim: 1. A chromium-containing fluorination catalyst comprising from 0.5 to less than 3% by weight of zinc based on the total weight of the catalyst, wherein from 92.0 to 99.0% by weight of the total weight of chromium in the catalyst is present as chromium (III) and from 1.0 to 8.0% by weight of the total weight of chromium in the catalyst is present as chromium (VI) and wherein the catalyst is amorphous or partially crystalline comprising less than 5.0% by weight of crystalline compounds of chromium and/or zinc. 2. The catalyst of claim 1 , wherein from 95.0 to 99.0% by weight of the total weight of chromium in the catalyst is present as chromium (III) and from 1.0 to 5.0% by weight of the total weight of chromium in the catalyst is present as chromium (VI). 3. The catalyst of claim 1 , wherein from 96.0 to 99.0% by weight of the total weight of chromium in the catalyst is present as chromium (III) and from 1.0 to 4.0% by weight of the total weight of chromium in the catalyst is present as chromium (VI). 4. The catalyst of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises one ormore chromium (VI) compounds selected from the group consisting of chromium (VI) oxide, chromic acid, fluorinated chromium (VI) oxide, chromium (VI) oxyfluorides and chromyl fluoride. 5. The catalyst of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises one or more chromium (III) compounds selected from the group of chromia, chromium (III) fluoride, fluorinated chromia and chromium (III) oxyfluorides. 6. The catalyst of claim 5 , Wherein the catalyst has been subjected to a calcination process and then subsequently fluorinated. 7. The catalyst of claim 1 , wherein the surface area of the catalyst is in the range of from 20 to 300 m 2 /g. 8. The catalyst of claim 1 , wherein the surface area of the catalyst is in the range of from 100 to 250 m 2 /g. 9. A process for the production of fluorinated hydrocarbons which comprises reacting a hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon with hydrogen fluoride at elevated temperature in the vapour phase in the presence of a fluorination catalyst as claimed in claim 1 . 10. The process of claim 9 , wherein 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of the catalyst to produce 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. 11. The process of claim 9 , wherein trichloroethylene is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of the catalyst to produce 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane. 12. The process of claim 9 , wherein dichlorotrifluoroethane is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of the catalyst to produce pentafluoroethane. 13. The process of claim 9 , wherein perchloroethylene is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of the catalyst to produce at least one of the following: dichlorotrifluoroethane, chlorotetrafluoroethane and pentafluoroethane.
