Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A medical device for the treatment and irrigation of a sinus opening is described. The device allows for single-handed operation to access, dilate and irrigate a sinus opening. The device includes a sinus guide catheter, a guiding element, a balloon dilation catheter, a balloon catheter movement mechanism and a guiding element movement mechanism. A method for treating a sinus opening and irrigating a sinus is also described.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A balloon dilation catheter for the treatment of a sinus opening, the balloon dilation catheter comprising: (a) a proximal end; (b) a distal end; and (c) a shaft system between said proximal end and said distal end, said shaft system having a proximal shaft section, a middle shaft section and a distal shaft section; said proximal shaft section comprising a balloon catheter movement mechanism and an inflation lumen; said middle shaft section comprising a hypotube having a guiding element insertion port, a guiding element lumen, a jacket disposed over the hypotube, and an inflation lumen, said guiding element lumen and said inflation lumen being side by side lumens, the jacket being slidable along the hypotube during use of the balloon dilation catheter; and said distal shaft section comprising an inflatable balloon and a guiding element lumen. 2. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 wherein the distal shaft section further comprises an atraumatic tip portion. 3. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 further comprising one or more direct visualization markers. 4. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 further comprising one or more radiographic markers. 5. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 2 wherein the atraumatic tip portion is radiographically visible. 6. A medical device for accessing and dilating a sinus, the device comprising: (a) a sinus guide catheter; (b) a guiding element; (c) a guiding element movement mechanism; and (d) a balloon dilation catheter comprising: (i) a proximal end, (ii) a distal end, and (iii) a shaft system between said proximal end and said distal end, said shaft system having a proximal shaft section, a middle shaft section and a distal shaft section; said proximal shaft section comprising a balloon catheter movement mechanism located on top of the guiding element movement mechanism and configured to slide over the guiding element movement mechanism, and an inflation lumen; said middle shaft section comprising a hypotube having a guiding element insertion port, a guiding element lumen, a polymeric jacket disposed over the hypotube, and an inflation lumen, said guiding element lumen and said inflation lumen being side by side lumens; and said distal shaft section comprising an inflatable balloon and a guiding element lumen. 7. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 6 wherein the balloon catheter movement mechanism is configured for advancement or retraction of the balloon catheter through the handle and guide catheter using a single finger or thumb. 8. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 6 further comprising one or more direct visualization markers. 9. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 6 wherein the medical device further comprises one or more radiographic markers. 10. The medical device of claim 6 wherein the guiding element is selected from the group consisting of a guidewire or a sinus illumination system. 11. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 , the jacket comprising a polymeric material. 12. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 , the jacket comprising a stiff material. 13. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 , the jacket defining a slit. 14. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 13 , the jacket defining a cutout, the slit corresponding to a distal portion of the hypotube, the cutout corresponding to a proximal portion of the hypotube. 15. The balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 , wherein the balloon catheter movement mechanism includes a U-shaped cavity sized and configured to slidably receive a guiding element movement mechanism such that the balloon catheter movement mechanism is configured to be located on top of the guiding element movement mechanism and to slide over the guiding element movement mechanism. 16. An apparatus comprising: (a) a catheter movement actuator; (b) a catheter shaft assembly extending distally from the catheter movement actuator, the catheter shaft assembly including: (i) an inflation lumen having a distal inflation lumen end, (ii) a guiding element lumen including a proximal portion extending along a first axis and being parallel relative to the distal inflation lumen end, and a distal portion extending along a second axis and being distal to the distal inflation lumen end, the first and second axes being different from each other, (iii) a hypotube, the guiding element lumen and the hypotube being configured to receive a guiding element, and (iv) a jacket disposed over the hypotube; and (c) a balloon at a distal end of the catheter shaft assembly, the balloon being configured to receive inflation fluid from the inflation lumen of the catheter shaft assembly. 17. The apparatus of claim 16 , the inflation lumen extending from a proximal end of the catheter shaft assembly to the distal end of the catheter shaft assembly. 18. The apparatus of claim 16 , the hypotube being positioned in an intermediate section of the catheter shaft assembly, distal to a proximal end of the catheter shaft assembly. 19. The apparatus of claim 18 , the catheter shaft assembly defining a guiding element entry point at the intermediate section, such that the catheter shaft assembly is configured to insertingly receive a guiding element via the guiding element entry point at the intermediate section. 20. The apparatus of claim 16 , the distal portion of the guiding element lumen extending through a full length of the balloon. 21. The apparatus of claim 20 , the distal portion of the guiding element lumen being coaxially positioned relative to a central longitudinal axis of the balloon. 22. The apparatus of claim 21 , the proximal portion of the guiding element lumen being laterally offset relative to the central longitudinal axis of the balloon. 23. The apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising an inflation port in fluid communication with the inflation lumen. 24. The apparatus of claim 23 , the inflation port being positioned proximally in relation to the catheter movement actuator.
