This invention discloses apparatus for generating an ophthalmic lens with at least a portion of one surface free-formed from a Reactive Mixture. In some embodiments, an ophthalmic lens is formed on a substrate with an arcuate optical quality surface via a source of actinic radiation controllable to cure a definable portion of a volume of Reactive Mixture.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for forming an ophthalmic lens having a first and second surface joined at a lens edge, comprising a forming optic having a first surface substantially complementary to said first surface of said ophthalmic lens; an actinic radiation generation device including an actinic radiation source, wherein the actinic radiation generation device provides as an output light in a predetermined narrow spectral band; a spatial light modulator comprised of an array of individually controllable elements; a light dump configured to absorb a portion of said output light; a reactive mixture, wherein polymerization of which is initiated by said narrow spectral band of light, said reactive mixture including a UV blocker capable of at least partially absorbing said narrow spectral band of light; a container holding said reactive mixture, said container having a shape that does not influence a shape of said ophthalmic lens; wherein said first surface of said forming optic is at least partially submerged within said reactive mixture within said container; wherein said output light from said actinic radiation generation device is directed onto the spatial light modulator, and wherein the array of individually controllable elements are each selectively controllable to either direct said output light onto and through said forming optic into said reactive mixture or to direct said output light away from said forming optic; wherein said light dump is configured to absorb output light directed away from said forming optic by said spatial light modulator. 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined narrow spectral band is centered around 365 nm. 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said actinic radiation source is a light emitting diode. 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the actinic radiation source is selected from the group consisting of a light emitting diode, an incandescent light source, laser light source, and lamp light source. 5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a second source of actinic radiation that provides as an output light in a second predetermined narrow spectral band. 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the second predetermined narrow spectral band is centered around 420 nm. 7. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the actinic radiation generator further includes at least one filter deployed on the light source to selectively filter light other than output light in said first and/or second predetermined narrow spectral bands. 8. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein said first and second sources of actinic radiation are first and second light emitting diodes.
