Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An automated system is provided for performing slide processing operations on slides bearing biological samples. In one embodiment, the disclosed system includes a slide tray holding a plurality of slides in a substantially horizontal position and a workstation that receives the slide tray. In a particular embodiment, a workstation delivers a reagent to slide surfaces without substantial transfer of reagent (and reagent borne contaminants such as dislodged cells) from one slide to another. A method for automated processing of slides also is provided.

First claim

We claim: 1. An automated method for processing microscope slides, the method comprising: robotically transporting a first slide carrier to a stainer workstation of a slide processing apparatus using a transporter device, wherein the first slide carrier holds specimen-bearing microscope slides in a coplanar and spaced-apart arrangement, robotically tilting the first slide carrier using the transporter device until the specimen-bearing microscope slides held by the first slide carrier are at an inclined orientation, wherein the slide processing apparatus is configured to hold a plurality of slide carriers; individually delivering reagents onto each of the specimen-bearing microscope slides without having reagent delivered onto one of the specimen-bearing microscope slides contacting any of the other specimen-bearing microscope slides, wherein an amount of the delivered reagent flows off the specimen-bearing microscope slides being held at the inclined orientation by the stainer workstation; and after removal of the amount of the delivered reagent, robotically transporting the first slide carrier to a holding station of the slide processing apparatus using the transporter device. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transporting a second slide carrier of the plurality of slide carriers to another workstation of the slide processing apparatus while the stainer workstation processes the specimen-bearing microscope slides held by the first slide carrier. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transporter device is configured to transport each of the plurality of slide carriers between a plurality of workstations of the slide processing apparatus. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first slide carrier is robotically tilted using the transporter device while the first slide carrier is located within a chamber of the slide processing apparatus. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the slide processing apparatus further comprises a rotatable sector configured to individually rotate the specimen-bearing microscope slides. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using a tilt pan in the stainer workstation to hold the first slide carrier at the inclined orientation. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of slide carriers is a slide tray. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the holding station has a plurality of parking spots each configured to hold a respective one of the plurality of slide carriers. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transporter device includes an elevator and a shuttle table. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the elevator is a Z-elevator, and the shuttle table is an X-Y shuttle table carried by the Z-elevator. 11. An automated method for processing microscope slides carrying specimens, the method comprising: robotically transporting a slide carrier to a stainer workstation of an enclosed slide processing apparatus using a transporter, wherein the slide carrier holds a plurality of specimen-bearing microscope slides at a co-planar arrangement; individually delivering reagent streams onto upper surfaces of the plurality of specimen-bearing microscope slides in the stainer workstation; robotically positioning the specimen-bearing microscope slides at one or more inclined positions using the transporter, wherein the one or more inclined positions promote flow of a portion of a volume of the delivered reagent along and off the upper surfaces, thereby removing the portion of the volume of delivered reagent; and after the portion of the volume of delivered reagent has been removed from the specimen-bearing microscope slides, robotically transporting the slide carrier holding the specimen-bearing microscope slides away from the stainer workstation. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the transporter is configured to transport the slide carrier away from the stainer workstation. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the stainer workstation processes the specimen-bearing microscope slides while the specimen-bearing microscope slides are held at one of the one or more inclined positions. 14. An automated method for processing microscope slides, the method comprising: using a transporter device to robotically transport a first slide carrier to a stainer workstation of a slide processing apparatus, wherein the first slide carrier holds specimen-bearing microscope slides in a coplanar spaced-apart arrangement; rotating the first slide carrier using the transporter device to position the specimen-bearing microscope slides, which are held by the first slide carrier, at an inclined orientation; individually delivering reagents onto each of the specimen-bearing microscope slides using the stainer workstation such that an amount of the delivered reagent flows off the specimen-bearing microscope slides held at the inclined orientation; and after removal of the amount of the delivered reagent, robotically transporting the first slide carrier using the transporter device to a holding station of the slide processing apparatus. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first slide carrier is configured to hold the specimen-bearing microscope slides such that upper surfaces of the specimen-bearing microscope slides are coplanar while the reagents are individually delivered onto each of the specimen-bearing microscope slides. 16. The method of claim 14 , wherein a portion of the transporter device that holds and rotates the first slide carrier is positioned outside of the stainer workstation while the reagents are individually delivered onto each of the specimen-bearing microscope slides. 17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the transporter device is configured to drop off the first slide carrier at the stainer workstation, and transport a second slide carrier to another workstation of the slide processing apparatus while the first slide carrier remains in the stainer workstation. 18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the transporter device includes an X-Y shuttle table and a Z-elevator configured to tilt a tilt pan of the stainer workstation.
