Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

There is a need for a selective, low-risk herbicide that can be used to control weeds in cereal cultures and turf. The present invention discloses that a bacterial secondary metabolite, thaxtomin and optionally another herbicide is an effective herbicide on broadleaved, sedge and grass weeds. Thaxtomin A and structurally similar compounds can be used as natural herbicides to control the germination and growth of weeds in cereal, turf grass, Timothy grass and pasture grass cultures with no phytotoxicity to these crops. As a natural, non-toxic compound, thaxtomin can be used as a safe alternative for weed control in both conventional and organic farming and gardening systems.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A synergistic herbicidal composition for controlling dandelion and/or plantain comprising 0.1 to 0.24 mg/ml of thaxtomin A and 0.176 to 2.34 mg/ml of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), wherein thaxtomin A and 2,4-D are present in a synergistic amount to control dandelion and/or plantain. 2. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises an adjuvant, a non-ionic surfactant and/or an organic solvent. 3. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises a non-ionic surfactant and/or an aliphatic alcohol. 4. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the thaxtomin A is derived from Streptomyces sp. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein synergistic herbicidal composition comprises a synergistic amount of (1) about 0.1 mg/ml thaxtomin A and (2) about 0.176 mg/ml 2,4-D to control dandelion. 6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the synergistic herbicidal composition comprises a synergistic amount of (1) about 0.24 mg/ml of thaxtomin A and (2) about 2.34 mg/ml of 2,4-D to control plantain. 7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the synergistic amount to controls Dandelion by at least 91.7%. 8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the synergistic amount to controls plantain by at least 83.3%.
